Huétor Fields, El Temple and the Cacín Valley, Granada Province, Spain.

Out on the fields and in to the Valley with John.

Pam and John, Day Five.

John and I headed out and started the day down on the local fields, on the way down we saw House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), Turtle (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur) and Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Corn Bunting (Triguero / Emberiza calandra), Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Common Magpie (Urraca / Pica pica) and Iberian  Magpie (Rabilargo / Cyanopica cooki).

Once we were down on the fields we picked up the Little Bustard (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), 4 of the 5 Black-winged Kites (Elanio Común / Elanus caeruleus), Common Quail (Codorniz Común / Coturnix coturnix), Montagu's Harrier (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Common Swift (Vencejo Común / Apus apus) and Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus).

We drove along the A92 and out onto the fields of El Temple where we drove several different tracks finding Crested (Cogujada / Galerida cristata) and Calandra Lark (Calandria / Melanocorypha calandra), Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops), Great Spotted Cuckoo (Crialo Europeo / Clamator gladarius), Stone Curlew (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus), Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa), Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) but heard only, Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), a flyover Peregrine Falcon (Halcón Peregrino / Falco peregrinus) and a couple of Rollers (Carraca / Coracias garrulus).

We headed off the area and across to the Cacín Valley finding Thekla Lark (Cogujada Montesina / Galerida theklae) but as it was already getting warm so things were quiet, however down by the Rio Cacín we did find Linnet (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Sylvia atricailla), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica), Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirundo daurica) and a singing Melodious Warbler (Zarcero Común / Hippolais polyglotta).

We started to make our way up the valley be immediately we were stopped as the road was closed, we turned around and went back up the hill and then went across country to the fields near Moraleda picking up another Little Owl on the way and out on the fields we had a pair of Black-bellied Sandgrouse, an Iberian Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis) and just before we reached the roads on the far side European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster) and a couple more Red-rumped Swallows which were sat up on some wire.
