Rio Velez, Malaga Province.

Some birding along the river after the Gulls.
Part two.

Caspian Tern (Pagaza Piquiroja / Sterna caspia).
Caspian Tern (Pagaza Piquiroja / Sterna caspia).
After finishing at Caleta I went for a walk along the Ro Velez but in the heat things were very quiet and I only managed to find Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild), Western Cattle (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis) and Little Egrets (Garceta Común / Egreta garzetta), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Cetti's (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti) and Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos) and Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris) but little else right up until the last minute when I was walking back to the car when 4 Caspian Terns (Pagaza Piquiroja / Sterna caspia) flew in and started to feed up and down the river. I watched them for some time before they moved off along the coast and then I went to meet Jayne and Barb in Torre before we went for lunch in Salabrena and an afternoon on the beach.

Caleta de Velez, Malaga Province.

Looking through the Gulls on the beach at Caleta de Velez.
Part one.

I had a couple of hours checking through the flock of mainly immature Yellow-legged Gulls (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis) and found several with rings again. Whilst there I also had lesser numbers of Mediterranean (Gaviota Cabecinegra / Larus melanocephalus), Black-headed (Gaviota Riedora / Larus ridibundus), Audouin's (Gaviota de Audouin / Larus audouinii) and Lesser Black-backed Gulls (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus) as well as singles of both Ruddy Turnstone (Vuelvepiedras Común / Arenaria interpres) and Sanderling (Correlimos Tridáctilo / Calidris alba).

Moraleda Fields and the Cacín Valley, Granada Province.

Another days birding in the heat.

Greater Short-toed Lark (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla).
I headed out to meet Sam Woods at a point between Loja and  and on the way I saw Iberian Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus / capensis), Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and Crested Lark (Cogujada / Galerida cristata) in the dull first light of the morning.
Once I had met Sam we made our way out to the fields near Moraleda de Zafayona, on the way we started the day list off with rapidly moving group of Iberian  Magpies (Rabilargo / Cyanopica cooki) as they flashed between the Olive trees and away and several House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus) as they flew up from the roadside.
Tawny Pipit (Bisbita Camprstre / Anthus campestris).
We made a quick stop beside the large aviaries containing the 50 or so Gyr type falcons before going out on to the stubble fields where the dust cloud that followed in our wake showed how parched and baked this site was. Even so we soon started to find birds in better than expected numbers including flocks of Greater Short-toed (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla) and Calandra Lark (Calandria / Melanocorypha calandra), as well as smaller numbers of Crested and Thekla (Cogujada Montesina / Galerida theklae).
In amongst the taller weeds that had come through the stubble we found several Hoopoes (Abubilla / Upupa epops) one of which flashed it's crest long enough for Sam to crack off a few shots and in the same area we came across a few migrating Northern Wheatears (Collalba Gris / Oenanthe oenanthe) and a Whinchat (Tarabilla Nortena / Saxicola rubetra).
Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops).
We crossed the felds to pay the rock pile Little Owls (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua) a visit but only found the one well grown youngster in residence but he gave Sam the time to get a few photographs before diving in to cover.
On the surrounding field we watched several Tawny Pipits (Bisbita campestre / Anthus campestris) picking their way through the dry vegetation trying to find some food to suport them during the next stage of the trip south and an adult Iberian Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis) but this chap was rather more camera shy than most.
European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster).
We moved on around the site looking for the elusive Sandgrouse but dipped during this visit, we did however see several immature Woodchat Shrikes (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), 3 Turtle Doves (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), hear at least 2 Iberian Green Woodpecker (Pito Real / Picus sharpei), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Common Magpie (Urraca / Pica pica), Willow Warbler (Mosquitero Musical / Phylloscopus trochillus), an immature male Common Redstart (Colirroja Real / Phoenicurus phoenicurus), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) and lots of Crimson Speckled Moths (Utetheisa pulchella).
Black Stork (Ciguena Negra / Ciconia nigra).
Cutting our looses we dropped down into the pine woodland along the Irrigation canal in the Cacín Valley where we parked and had a walk down to the Rio Cacín lookng for migrants but it was fairly quiet and we only found Pied (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca) and Spotted Flycatchers (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata) in the way of migrants but we did also find Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Común / Certhia brachydactyla), Great (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Coal (Carbonero Garrapinos / Parus ater) and Blue Tits (Herrerillo Común / Parus caeruleus), a very vocal male Common Crossbill (Piquituerto Común / Loxia curvirostra), a Hawfinch (Picogordo / Coccotraustes coccotrauetes) which stopped all to briefly in a nearby tree, Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Cetti's (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti) and Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus) both of which skulked out of sight low down in the reeds with the calling Water Rail (Rascón Europeo / Rallus aquaticus).
Black Stork (Ciguena Negra / Ciconia nigra).
We missed the bridge site out and went straight to the Contra-embalse where we made a stop at the northern end after Sam picked out a few Pallid Swifts (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus) x6 in amongst the good numbers of Barn (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) and Red-rumped Swallows (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica), House (Avión Común / Delichon urbica) and Sand Martins (Avión Zapador / Riparia riparia) and European Bee-eaters (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster).
Bonelli's Eagle (Aguila-azor / Hieraetus faciatus).
We walked out on to the hill over looking the water, on the way seeing several Red-veined Darters (Sympetrum fonscolombii). As we scanned what was left of the lake we notice a large dark bird flying towards the far end reed beds and soon realised it was a Black Stork (Ciguena Negra / Ciconia nigra) which was probably feeding up before continuing on south.
There were also at least 9 Grey Herons (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), 60+ Common Pochard (Porrón Común / Aythya ferina), 10+ Northern Shoveler (Pato Cuchara / Anas clypeata), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra) and Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus).
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) Female.
Just down the road we stopped again and had another look at the Stork but on the sand bars that were exposed due to the low level of the water we also had a few more species including Common (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos) and Green Sandpipers (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), White (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba) and Yellow Wagtails (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and up on the margins there was a male Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata) surveying its patch from a tall dead thistle spike.
We again continued south along the valley to the gorge area adding Lesser Kestrel (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni), Mistle Thrush (Zorzal Charlo / Turdus viscivorus) and Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor) to the day list.
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) Female.
Once in the gorge Sam found a fine Bonelli's Eagle (Aguila-azor / Hieraetus faciatus) sat a little way further down on the cliffs, we set the scope up and had a better view before it took off and headed south along with a second bird which came up closer to us giving good views.
We also had a distant but nice male Blue-rock Thrush (Roquero Solitario / Monticola solitarius), hundreds of House Martins on the far cliff along with a few Crag Martins (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris) and Rock Sparrows (Gorrión Chillón / Petronia petronia).
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) Female.
We went back north and as we slowed down to avoid a couple of potholes I looked down at vegetation at the side of the car and was amazed to see a Desert Orange-tip (Colotis evagore), I stopped as quickly as I could but we could not find it again.
After spending hours searching for this species down on the Granada Coast a week or so earlier I have been looking at every white butterfly that has crossed my path but did not expect to find one in the Cacín Valley, well pleased as I think Sam could tell !! We called at a bar in Cacín to have a drink and collect a sandwich which we ate whist checking the ridges above the village for Raptors but with out success.
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) Female.
We moved on again and as I was determined to find Sam a Sandgrouse we went back to the fields where we had started the day but this time I was more confident we would see them as in the heat of the afternoon the regularly use a certain patch of Almond trees for shade and are reluctant to fly out into the sun.
We arrived at the spot and right along side the track we quickly found a female Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) sat in the shade and she was very unwilling to move. We rolled in close and she just appeared to totally ignore us and she was still sat in the same spot when we drove off ten minutes later.
On our way off the site we finished the list off with a pale phase Booted Eagle (Aguililla Calzada / Hieraaetus pennatus) which was soaring over the town of Moraleda. We headed back towards Sams mothers where he was staying having a look on a couple of the fields near Huétor but added nothing to the list.
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) Female.
Thanks to Sam for his company and a good days birding. I enjoyed reminiscing about some of the rarities we had seen back in the UK years ago.

Zapata, near Malaga Airport, Malaga Province.

Some good birding and dragonfly hunting in the heat.

Female Banded Grondling (Brachythemis leucosticta).
I dropped Jayne and Barb off in Malaga and headed past the airport to a spot I had only ever visited once before after reading about in on the Adalucian Bird Society facebook page called Zapata.
Male Banded Grondling (Brachythemis leucosticta).
The first area I came to is a reed and iris filled ditch but apart from a ford across the ditch viewing of the water is impossible so I did not see a lot here except for several Western Cattle Egrets (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis) feeding amongst a large flock of sheep which were drinking at the ford, Cetti's (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti), Reed (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus) and Sardinian Warblers (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Greater Short-toed Larks (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla) x5, Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Crested Lark (Cogujada / Galerida cristata), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major) and Common Waxbills (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild).
Immature male Montagu's Harrier (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus).
I also saw Stripe-necked Terrapin (Mauremys leprosa), Epaulet Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysostigma) x2M, Blue / Common Emperor (Anax imperator) x1M and Red-veined Darters (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x4M & 2F.
Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra).
I crossed to the opposite bank and check the areas around a couple of abandoned looking workshops there adding a very smart fly through immature male Montagu's Harrier (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus), Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops), an immature Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis) and in the chainlink fence along the track dozens of Serins (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and a few Linnets (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina).
Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta).
I went under the bridge and parked down near the river again but could not see any water here either but I still had a walk along one of the tracks where I added Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica), Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata), Large White (Pieris brassicae), Mediterranean skipper (Gegenes nostrodamus), Lang's Short-tailed Blue (Leptotes pirithous), Long-tailed Blue (Lampides boeticus) and Long Skimmer (Orthetrum trinacria) x1M.
Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta).
Not knowing the site very well I then had a drive around for a short while and found a super spot at a ford across the Guadalhorce where I parked mid stream and sat to see what came to me.
Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta).
In the hour or so I was there I had views of Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta), a flock of at least 5 Penduline Tits (Pájaro Moscón / Remiz pendulinus), a Kingfisher (Martin Pescador / Alcedo atthis) which wizzed past several times, a Great Reed Warbler (Carricero Tordal / Acrocephalus arundinaceus) which flashed across into the reeds and on a drier patch up stream an immature male Common Redstart (Colirroja Real / Phoenicurus phoenicurus) and a female type Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca).
Little Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Chico / Charadrius dubius).
I move along the river again to a more open area and had a walk looking at the dragonflies and added Lesser Emperor (Anax parthenope) x3M & 2F, Banded Grondling (Brachythemis leucosticta) x7M & 4F, Orange-winged Dropwing (Trithemis kirbyi) x2M, Long Skimmer x2M as well as Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), 8 or more Little Ringed Plovers (Chorlitejo Chico / Charadrius dubius), Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos) and lots more Yellow (Spanish) Wagtails
Common Redstart (Colirroja Real / Phoenicurus phoenicurus).
I moved back to the ford again and spent what time there was left looking at the Dragonflies there and was surprised to find a fresh looking Ringed Cascader (Zygonyx torridus) x1M, Violet Dropwing (Trithemis annulata) x2M and more Blue / Common Emperor's x2M.
Female type Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca).
My time was up but I had enjoyed the few hours at this very nice site and will certainly go back again when I am in the Malaga area.

Monday 5 September 2016

La Malaha and the Cacín Valley, Granada Province.

A hot days birding with Louise and Warren from the UK.

Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua).
I met Louise and Warren at Padul and whilst we were having a coffee before they arrived I had a Sparrowhawk (Gavilán Común / Accipiter nisus) come past and once they arrived we started the list with a couple of Honey Buzzards (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus) passing to the west as we all had a coffee. We finished and headed for La Malaha picking up a Black Kite (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans) sat in a field and a little further down the road an  Iberian Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis) sat nicely on a farm buildling roof as well as a single Willow Warbler (Mosquitero Musical / Phylloscopus trochillus) several more Honey Buzzards and Black Kites passed over west.
Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua).
We were going to check an old cortijo on the way through for Lesser Kestrel (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni) but there were a few guys working around the building so we decided to just call in at the main rubbish dump and have a look what was about. We saw Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula) and Crested Lark (Cogujada / Galerida cristata).
Honey Buzzards (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus).
We went passed La Malaha and out on to some near by fields, during a roadside stop we had a largish group of Lesser Kestrels on some wires including a nice male, Short-toed Lark (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla), Northern Wheatear (Collalba Gris / Oenanthe oenanthe), Tawny Pipit (Bisbita campestre / Anthus campestris) and a very distant Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea).
Honey Buzzard (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus).
On the fields we did not see a lot but did find a Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis) and House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus). On our way off the site we had a nice Scarce Swallowtail (Chupaleches / Iphiclides podalirius feisthameli) and a couple of Small Whites (Pieris rapae).
Honey Buzzard (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus).
We then did a drive across to the fields at Moraleda, on the way we had Red-rumped (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica) and Barn Swallows (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) on wires and a couple of European Bee-eaters (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster) in a tree as well as Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus), a Willow Warbler and another Little Owl.
On the fields we searched for the Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) but dipped mainly I think due to the hunting over the weekend disturbing them from the areas we searched. We did however see the rock pile Little Owls, Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops) and 400+ Honey Buzzards (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus) which were travelling south and the heading off West.
Honey Buzzard (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus).
Due to the fields being quiet we dropped down into the pine woods and had a walk there adding Coal (Carbonero Garrapinos / Parus ater), Great (Carbonera Común / Parus major) and Long-tailed Tits (Mito / Aegithalos caudatus), Cetti's (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti) and Sardinian Warblers (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), several female type Pied Flycatchers (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca), Common Crossbill (Piquituerto Común / Loxia curvirostra), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Común / Certhia brachydactyla), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris) and lots more Honey Buzzards
Honey Buzzard (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus).
We next stopped by the river and found Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Sylvia atricailla), Grey Wagtail (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea), more Common Crossbills and a male Orange-winged Dropwing (Trithemis kirbyi).
Honey Buzzards (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus).
Slightly further on and we stopped at the Contra-embalse de Bermejalis where the water was quite low but the only waders we found were a couple of Green Sandpipers (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus) as well as Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Northern Shoveler (Pato Cuchara / Anas clypeata), Common Pochard (Porrón Común / Aythya ferina), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), Yellow (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and White Wagtails (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba).
Argiope lobata.
Down further along the valley we checked the gorge and notched up a few extra species in the shape of Blue-rock Thrush (Roquero Solitario / Monticola solitarius), Crag Martin (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus) and a very smart spider called Argiope lobata.
We had a late lunch in Cacín and then headed back towards Granada across the ridge to Ventas de Huelma but added nothing as it had reach the late 30s and most things had gone for cover so we deciede to do the same and call it a day.
Red-rumped (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica) and Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica).
Thanks to Louise and Warren for a good days birding, better than I thought now I look through the list.
