La Janda, Cadiz Province and travelling home to Granada Province, Spain.

My last morning in Cadiz with John.

We decided to head back to the Río Celemín area of La Janda where we unsuccessfully looked for the Rustic Bunting (Escribano rústico / Emberiza rustica), however we did again see a good number of the wintering Little Buntings (Escribano pigmeo / Emberiza pusilla) and other smaller species included  Reed (Escribano Palustre / Emberiza schoeniclus) and Corn Bunting (Triguero / Emberiza calandra), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Linnet (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Meadow Pipit (Bisbita Pratense / Anthus pratensis), Tree (Gorrión Molinero / Passer montanus), House (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus) and Spanish Sparrow (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Sylvia atricapilla), Common Chiffchaff (Mosquitero Común / Phylloscopus collybita), Cetti's Warbler (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula), Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops) and an Iberian Green Woodpecker (Pito Real / Picus sharpei) which we could hear off in the distance.

Other water birds and larger species seen included Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Western Swamp-hen (Calamon Común / Porphyrio porphyrio), lots of Common Cranes (Grulla Común / Grus grus), Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus), Eurasian Spoonbill (Espátula Común / Platalea leucorodia), Great Cormorant (Cormorán Grande / Phalacrocroax carbo), Lesser Black-backed Gull (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus), Little Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Chico / Charadrius dubius), Common Snipe (Agachadiza Común / Gallinago gallinago), Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), Marsh Harrier (Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental / Circus aeruginosus) and Black Kite (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans).

After a while we returned to the car seeing a couple of Pallid Swifts (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus) on the way and drove out to the main Canal and then followed it as far as the Junction on the A-340 where road to Zahara de los Atunes meets it, on the drive we saw Black-winged Kite (Elanio Común / Elanus caeruleus), Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Pheasant (Faisán Vulgar / Phaisanus colchicus), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros) and White Stork (Ciguena Blanca / Ciconia ciconia).

We returned to our original site where we found Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirundo daurica), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica), Booted (Aguila Calzada / Aquila pennatus) and Short-toed Eagle (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus) and heard a distant Common Quail (Codorniz Común / Coturnix coturnix) before heading back to John's where I said Goodbye after a great few days birding (THANKS JOHN) and headed off home.

Marisma de Cetina, Punto Mágico Miralamar, Laguna de Jeli, Field area and Alcalá de los Gazules, Cadiz Province, Spain.

My second day birding with John.

We headed out to the very good Marisma de Cetina but made a stop for some breakfast at Restaurante Venta Andrés on the way, as we drove we saw Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax), Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Corn Bunting (Triguero / Emberiza calandra) and Western Cattle Egret (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis).

We arrived at the Salinas and went in through the big metal gates and walked the main track up as far as the first hide, along this stretch we saw Meadow Pipit (Bisbita Pratense / Anthus pratensis), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), plenty of Greater Flamingo's (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus), Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenuela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Avocets (Avoceta Común / Recurvirostra avosetta), Black-tailed Godwits (Aguja Colinegra / Limosa limosa), Dunlin (Correlimos Común / Calidris alpina), Little Stint (Correlimos Menudo / Calidris minuta), Kentish Plover (Chorlitejo Patinegro / Charadrius alexandrinus), Shelduck (Tarro Blanco / Tadoma tadorna), Lesser Black-backed (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus) and Yellow-legged Gull (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), White Stork (Ciguena Blanca / Ciconia ciconia), Eurasian Spoonbill (Espátula Común / Platalea leucorodia), Greenshank (Archibebe Claro / Tringa nebularia) and several Mediterranean / Lesser Short-toed Lark (Terrera Marismena / Calandrella rufescens).

At the hide we scanned the far salt pans finding Grey Plover (Chorlito Gris / Pluvialis squatarola), Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), Caspian Tern (Pagaza Piquiroja / Sterna caspia), Black-headed Gull (Gaviota Reidora / Chroicocephalus ridibundus),  Northern Shoveler (Pato Cuchara / Anas clypeata), Eurasian Teal (Cerceta Común / Anas crecca), Marsh Harrier (Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental / Circus aeruginosus), Great Cormorant (Cormorán Grande / Phalacrocroax carbo) and Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus).

From here we took the side track along to the fresh water pools, on the way we saw several Common Snipe (Agachadiza Común / Gallinago gallinago), Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Linnet (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina), Cetti's Warbler (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti), Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata), Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros), Common Chiffchaff (Mosquitero Común / Phylloscopus collybita), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor) and on the pool and ditches we added Wood Sandpiper (Andarrios Bastardo / Tringa glareola), Bluethroat (Ruiseñor Pechiazul / Luscinia svecica), Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta), Skylark (Alondra Común / Alauda arvensis) and 2x Stone Curlews (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus).

On the walk back to the car we added a few new species including both Dark and Light morph Booted Eagles (
Aguila Calzada / Aquila pennatus), Reed Bunting (Escribano Palustre / Emberiza schoeniclus), Sedge Warbler (Carricerin Común / Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) and Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus).

We reached the cars and decided to head to the Punto Mágico Miralamar and Laguna de Jeli area, as we left the Marismas we picked up
Crested Lark (Cogujada / Galerida cristata), Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula) and Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto).

We drove through the fields of the Punto Mágico Miralamar area but we added nothing new, at the parking area for Laguna de Jeli we had several Small White (Pieris rapae) x18+ and on the track to the dry laguna we again saw nothing new bird wise but found Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) x1, Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) x3, Spanish Festoon (Zerynthia rumina) x1, Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) x2 and Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) x3.

We moved on again to another area of fields which I don't know the name of but they looked good and we soon found good numbers of Calandra Larks (Calandria / Melanocorypha calandra), a Short-toed Eagle (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus) and Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo).

We returned to John's and set our selves up on the terrace again and did some Raptor watching, as we watched we had 
Sparrowhawk (Gavilán Común / Accipiter nisus) x1, Cinereous / European Black Vulture (Buitre Negro / Aegypius monachus) x1, Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus) x13, Iberian Imperial Eagle (Aguila Imperial Ibérica / Aguila adalberti) x1, Black Kite (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans) x4, Peregrine Falcon (Halcón Peregrino / Falco peregrinus) x1 and Lesser Kestrel (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni) x17.

Algeciras, La Janda, Benalup, Arroyo del Yeso near Los Badalejos, Valcargado Track and Alcalá de los Gazules, Cadiz Province, Spain.

The first days birding with Friend John Cantelo in Cadiz Province.

Blue-winged Teal (Cerceta Aliazul / Anas discors) male.
I set off early from home early heading for Algeciras where I was going to meet up with John Cantelo, as I drove to Huétor on my way to the A92 I picked up a Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua) on one of the telegraph poles and then had a Eurasian Eagle Owl (Búho Real / Bubo bubo) fly across in front of me seen by the lights of the Asparagus Factory.

I arrived at Palmones where I went in to the Bar Restaurante La Estrella and had some breakfast before I met John on the car park near Leroy Merlin, we left his car there and headed onto Punta Paredones where we were hoping to see the long staying male American Blue-winged Teal (Cerceta Aliazul / Anas discors) which I had dipped on a week or so ago.

We arrived and dropped down to the area below the bridge out to the port and checked the rather smelly foreshore by one of at least two raw sewage outlets which run straight into the bay, in this area we saw Mallards (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Great Cormorant (Cormorán Grande / Phalacrocroax carbo), Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Grande / Charadrius hiaticula), Dunlin (Correlimos Común / Calidris alpina), Grey Plover (Chorlito Gris / Pluvialis squatarola), Common Redshank (Archibebe Común / Tringa totanus), Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), Yellow-legged Gull (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Common Chiffchaff (Mosquitero Común / Phylloscopus collybita) and Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor).

There was no sign of the target so we walked along the top of the channel and down to the far end near to the second sewage out flow and as we scanned the water from a high point John picked up the Teal so we went down to the lower prom and watched it from there but the light was not great, we did however add Whimbrel (Zarapito Trinador / Numenius phaeopus), Black-headed (Gaviota Reidora / Chroicocephalus ridibundus), Mediterranean (Gaviota Cabecinegra / Larus melanocephalus) and Lesser Black-backed Gull (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus), Western Cattle Egret (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Siskin (Lúgano / Carduelis spinus), Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) and Small White (Pieris rapae).

We returned to the car and then back for John's motor before heading up to the Benalup entrance to La Janda and then along the track to the Río Celemín area where we were soon being mesmerized by the flocks of calling Common Cranes (Grulla Común / Grus grus) and the impressive numbers of Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus) feeding in the rice stubble fields.

We stood up on the road and scanned the bushes along the track and soon had the first of at least 7 Little Buntings (Escribano pigmeo / Emberiza pusilla) which showed regularly but were always distant as well as good numbers of Corn Buntings (Triguero / Emberiza calandra), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Linnet (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis) and Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs).

As we stood there and during a couple of strolls up to the River we added
Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), White Stork (Ciguena Blanca / Ciconia ciconia), Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), Marsh Harrier (Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental / Circus aeruginosus), Red Kite (Milano Real / Milvus milvus), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), adult and immature Iberian Imperial Eagle (Aguila Imperial Ibérica / Aguila adalberti), Iberian Green Woodpecker (Pito Real / Picus sharpei), Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax), Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula), Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), a singing Sedge Warbler (Carricerin Común / Acrocephalus schoenobaenus), Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirundo daurica), Cetti's Warbler (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti), Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Sylvia atricapilla), Song Thrush (Zorzal Común / Turdus philomelos), Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), Bluethroat (Ruiseñor Pechiazul / Luscinia svecica), Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata), Spanish (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis) and Tree Sparrow (Gorrión Molinero / Passer montanus), Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Meadow Pipit (Bisbita Pratense / Anthus pratensis) along with my first Spanish Festoon (Zerynthia rumina) of the year and Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus).

Again we returned to the cars and then John took me to two places I had not been to before, on the way I saw 2x Monarchs (Danaus plexippus) as we drove through Benalup, the first was a very interesting looking track near the village of Los Badalejos where we saw many of the species seen earlier but added just a Great Spotted Cuckoo (Crialo Europeo / Clamator gladarius) which was only seen by John.

The second site was along the Valcargado track, almost straight away this site started to produce when we picked up a Golden Eagle (Águila Real / Aquila chrysaetos) being mobbed by an immature looking Bonelli's Eagle (Aguila Perdicera / Aquila faciatus) and in the same view at times there was a Cinereous / European Black Vulture (Buitre Negro / Aegypius monachus) and nearby Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), Red (Milano Real / Milvus milvus) and Black Kites (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans), Marsh Harrier and Common Buzzard.

We drove further along the track seeing 2 more
Bonelli's Eagles including a cracking adult bird which showered well.

At the end of the drive able part of the track we scanned the ridges for a while before driving back adding singles of
Sparrowhawk (Gavilán Común / Accipiter nisus), Short-toed (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus) and Iberian Imperial Eagle.

Once we were back on the tarmac we headed for John's house and spent a few hours raptor watching from his Terrace where we saw 40 or so Lesser Kestrel (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni), an adult Bonelli's, 4x Sparrowhawks, Griffon Vultures, Black Kites and another Short-toed.

Later John did us a nice meal and we sat and had a few beers and a good chat.
