Huétor Fields, Granada Province, Spain.

A walk down to Huétor and then on to the Mechanic's.

I decided to have a walk down to Huétor as I still hadn't got the car back, I walked down to the end of the road and took the main road to town as far as the railway where I took to the fields and then along the Dog S**t track to the ring road.
On the way down to the bottom of the road I started the list with Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), Eurasian Hoopoe (Abubilla Común / Upupa epops), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Cetti's (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti) and Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala), Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis), European Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Chloris chloris), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major), a good sized flock of Iberian  Magpies (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki) and European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola).
I walked towards the town on the main road adding Eurasian Magpie (Urraca Común / Pica pica), Crested (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata) and Greater Short-toed Lark (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla), Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild), Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Common Linnet (Pardillo Común / Linaria cannabina), European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus) and Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra).
Once I had crossed the Railway line via the foot bridge I took to the fields and walked out through the Asparagus to the track down to town which all the dog walkers seem to use and allow them to S**t everywhere but as I dodged the piles I saw Feral Pigeon (Paloma Bravía / Columba livia), 16 Little Bustards (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax), 11x Eurasian Stone Curlews (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus), a single Northern Lapwing (Avefria Europea / Vanellus vanellus), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula), Sand Martin (Avión Zapador / Riparia riparia), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), a nice male Bluethroat (Ruiseñor Pechiazul / Luscinia svecica), Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada), Spotted (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata) and European Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca), Grey (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea) and White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba).
I went into town and did some shopping, had breakfast and then went down to the Mechanic's where he was still working on the car and still having problems. He took me back home and I spent a while sorting out a fall back car which I sorted which friend Chris again but later in the evening I got a call from the Mechanic to say all was sorted and he was on his way to collect me.

Huétor Fields, Granada Province, Spain.

We started the morning with breakfast again in the Combustibles Gómez petrol station bar and then went just across the road to our first stop where we were very pleased to find the wintering flock of 16 Little Bustards (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax) as well as 4 Eurasian Stone Curlew (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus), the first of several Whinchats (Tarabilla Norteña / Saxicola rubetra), Northern Wheatear (Collalba Gris / Oenanthe oenanthe), White (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba) and Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), 2 flyover Common Crossbills (Piquituerto Común / Loxia curvirostra), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto) and 3x Northern Lapwing (Avefria Europea / Vanellus vanellus).  
After a while we made our way up to the Lucerne Fields and parked where I usually go and then scanned the fields from there adding Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Gavilán Común / Accipiter nisus), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Iberian  Magpie (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki), Cetti's (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti), Sardinian (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala) and Common Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus).

We steadily moved on around the Lucerne Fields and again checked the fence at the far end, as we did this we saw Grey Wagtail (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum), European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola), European Pied (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca) and Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis), European Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Chloris chloris), European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus) and Common Linnet (Pardillo Común / Linaria cannabina).
We drove to the plantation adding a single Short-toed Snake Eagle (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus) and heard a calling Great Spotted Woodpecker (Pico Picapinos / Dendrocopos major) before heading to the tracks and irrigation channels on the Mesia road where we did a short walk seeing Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild), Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa) and another 2 Northern Lapwings.

Other species seen during the trip around the fields were Bath (Pontia daplidice) x2, Large (Pieris brassicae) x1 and Small White (Pieris rapae) x23, Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) x4, Lang's Short-tailed Blue (Leptotes pirithous) x2 and Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x5.
We drove down the tracks along the railway line and to the town via the Airfield but we didn't add anything new so Barbara and Derek dropped me back up to the house and then they headed off home after an enjoyable few days.

Puerto del la Ragua and Fields of Hernán-Valle, Granada Province, Spain.

Off up high and then out on the fields to the East of Granada with Barbara and Derek.

We were off earlish and on our way around the North of Granada city, through the Sierra de Huétor and after some breakfast near to Diezma we went North of Guadix and up the Sierra Nevada passed the Castillo de La Calahorra.

We reached the parking at Puerto del la Ruagua and first of all walked around the pine woodland where the picnic tables are but it was generally quiet so we headed towards the road where we had a flock of Tits come passed which were mainly Long-tailed (Mito Común / Aegithalos caudatus)but there were also smaller numbers of Great (Carbonera Común / Parus major) and Coal (Carbonero Garrapinos / Periparus ater), as well as a calling Eurasian Nuthatch (Trepador Azul / Sitta europaea).

We crossed the road and went out onto the Open area but we didn't find anything new, at this point Derek and I went for a walk up the stream line on the far side of the clear area and Barbara went back to the car.

As we walked we picked better numbers of birds which included 2x
Citril Finch (Verderón Serrano / Carduelis citrinella) fly overs, Common Crossbills (Piquituerto Común / Loxia curvirostra), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Europeo / Certhia brachydactyla), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Mistle Thrush (Zorzal Charlo / Turdus viscivorus), European Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola), Eurasian Wren (Chochin paleártico / Troglodytes troglodytes), Common Chiffchaff (Mosquitero Común / Phylloscopus collybita), Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada), Spectacled (Curruca Tomillera / Curruca conspicillata) and Willow Warbler (Mosquitero Musical / Phylloscopus trochillus), Common Firecrest (Reyezuelo Listado / Regulus ignicapilla), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus) and Eurasian Jay (Arrendajo Euroasiático / Garrulus glandarius).

During the walk we also saw a nice male

We dropped down off the hill and after getting a coffee in Calahorra we went some of the way back to Guadix and then took the cross country route to Hernán-Valle, as we drove the sometime rough tracks and at a couple of stops we recorded

Huétor Fields, El Temple and the Cacín Valley, Granada Province, Spain.

First of three days with friends Barbara and Derek from the coast.

I started the day by dropping the car down to the mechanic's in Venta Nueva, I then walked back to the main road and waited for friends Barbara and Derek to pick me up to start a three day visit for some birding, they arrived and our first port of call was at Combustibles Gómez petrol station bar where we had some breakfast before heading to our first birding spot just up the road where we scanned the fields.
Out on the fields we saw 4x Eurasian Stone Curlews (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus), Whinchat (Tarabilla Norteña / Saxicola rubetra), European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola), Common Linnet (Pardillo Común / Linaria cannabina), lots of Eurasian Collared Doves (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto) and unfortunately a great many Feral Pigeons (Paloma Bravía / Columba livia), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula) and Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis).
We moved up the road and out to the parking by the Lucerne fields where we again spent some time searching the fields and the sky for new species and we managed to find Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Iberian  Magpie (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), Common Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild), Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra),   European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus) and Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major).
We drove along the top track to the Walnut trees where we stopped again but we picked up a Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua) on the way and had a short walk to check the fence lines finding European Pied (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca) and Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), Whinchat, Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada) and Eurasian Hoopoe (Abubilla Común / Upupa epops), 
On our way down to the town we dropped on a couple of Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Gorrión Molinero / Passer montanus) which were the first I have seen on the patch for a while.
We headed off up the A92 and then out onto the El Temple area where we drove quite a few of the tracks which cross the area seeing Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa), another Stone Curlew, Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Booted (Aguila Calzada / Aquila penntuas) and Golden Eagle (Águila Real / Aquila chrysaetos), a smart looking male Lesser Kestrel (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni), Greater Short-toed Lark (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla), Eurasian Magpie (Urraca Común / Pica pica), Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum), Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros), Northern Wheatear (Collalba Gris / Oenanthe oenanthe), Tawny Pipit (Bisbita Camprstre / Anthus campestris), Rabbit (Conejo / Oryctolagus cuniculus), 10535 Crimson Speckled (Utetheisa pulchella), Vagrant Emperor (Anax ephippiger) x1 and Bath White (Pontia daplidice) x3 plus several of the species we saw earlier on the fields.
We moved on towards the Cacín Valley, on the way over Barbara and Derek where amazed and appalled by the amount of habitat destruction being caused in the name of green energy, NET ZERO at what ever the cost to the environment and local wildlife.
We dropped down into the Cacín valley and then drove up to the Contra-embalse de Bermejalis, here we scanned the lake and Margins adding Northern Shoveler (Cuchara Común / Spatula clypeata), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Eurasian Teal (Cerceta Común / Anas crecca), Common Pochard (Porrón Europeo / Aythya ferina), Gadwall (Anade Friso / Mareca strepera), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), Water Rail (Rascón Europeo / Rallus aquaticus), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenuela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Short-toed Snake Eagle (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Common Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus), Sand Martin (Avión Zapador / Riparia riparia), Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi), Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x3 and Desert Orange-tip (Colotis evagore) x3.
We returned to the house and spent a very nice evening up on the terrace having some food and red wine.

Padul Wetlands, Granada Province, Spain.

I met Polly at the bar near the Padul exit off the Motorway and we drove down to the Cafe-Bar Restaurante Montesol near the reserve and parked before dropping down to the side of the lake and walked Clockwise around to the visitor center and then took the track down along the Eastern side for a while then turned around and retraced our steps.

On the first part of the walk along the north shore we saw Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Northern Shoveler (Cuchara Común / Spatula clypeata), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Great Cormorant (Cormorán Grande / Phalacrocroax carbo), Western Marsh Harrier (Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental / Circus aeruginosus), European Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Common Reed (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus) and Cetti's Warbler (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti), Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada) and plenty of Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus).

We walked through the low figs and out to the trees near to the visitors center where we sat for a while on one of the benches seeing more Eurasian Blackcaps, a single Garden (Curruca Mosquitera / Sylvia borin), a couple of Willow (Mosquitero Musical / Phylloscopus trochillus) and Sardinian Warblers (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala), Great Spotted Woodpecker (Pico Picapinos / Dendrocopos major) heard, Great (Carbonera Común / Parus major) and Eurasian Blue Tit (Herrerillo Común / Cyanistes caeruleus) as well as African Grass Blue (Zizeeria knysna) x2 and Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) x5.

Along the Eastern side we checked a couple of side tracks and as we walked we bumped into a couple of Medio Ambiante Agents who I recognised eventually, we had a chat and they told us about a Black-winged Kite (Elanio Común / Elanus caeruleus) they had seen so we headed in the direction they told us but before we reached the spot we picked up a Kite in a tree off to the left of the track not the right where they had said.

Expecting it was the same bird that had relocated I was surprised to see another bird still sat where they told us it would be, as we walked we also saw
Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Feral Pigeon (Paloma Bravía / Columba livia), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Common Redstart (Colirroja Real / Phoenicurus phoenicurus), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Red-rumped (Golondrina Dáurica / Cecropis daurica) and Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) and  Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum).

By now it was getting warm so we returned to the car on the same route, we then did the complete loop in the car but we only added
Northern Wheatear (Collalba Gris / Oenanthe oenanthe), European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola) and Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x8 before we headed back to Polly's car and then homeward.
