Charca de Suarez and surroundings, Near Zafarraya and further North, Granada Province, Spain.

On the Coast and later up in the mountains.

We started the day by driving down to Motril area where we had a coffee before heading into the Charca de Suarez nature reserve when it opened at 10:00.

Pepe opened the gate and we had a walk around the small pool just inside finding Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada), Common Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus) and Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi).

On the track towards Alamo Blanca we checked the raised viewing area as there we lots of wild flowers there but we only found

As we walked we added Yellow flag-iris (Iris pseudacorus), Crown Daisy (Chrysanthemum carinatum), Purple Bugloss (Echium plantagineum), Pitch Trefoil (Psoralea bituminosa), Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) x13, Yellow-legged Gull (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis), Cetti's Warbler (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti), Common Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis), European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus) and 4 flyover Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus).

Laguna Alamo Blanco.
The pool of Laguna Alamo Blanca was quiet, we only saw a few Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), a single Muscovy Duck (Pato criollo / Cairina moschata), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra)and the hybrid between it and the Red-knobbed Coot (Focha Moruna / Fulca cristata) and a couple of Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis) so we moved on and checked the hide over looking the Northern end of Laguna del Taraje where we saw a second Hybrid Coot, Northern Shoveler (Cuchara Común / Spatula clypeata) and Stripe-necked Terrapin (Mauremys leprosa).

As we walked around to the main hide over looking Laguna de las Aneas we added
Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) x2, African Grass Blue (Zizeeria knysna) x3, more Iberian Bluetails, Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea) x2, Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Monk Parakeet (Cotorra Argentina / Myiopsitta monachus), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Western Bonelli's Warbler (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli), Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild) and a nice male Common Redstart (Colirroja Real / Phoenicurus phoenicurus).

From the hide we saw
Common Pochard (Porrón Europeo / Aythya ferina), Little (Garceta Común / Egretta garzetta) and Western Cattle Egret (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Red-knobbed Coot (Focha Moruna / Fulca cristata), Great Cormorant (Cormorán Grande / Phalacrocroax carbo), Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenuela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Common Swift (Vencejo Común / Apus apus) and Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica).

We moved on again and walked around to the Laguna del Trébol hide where we picked up Water Rail (Rascón Europeo / Rallus aquaticus) heard, 2 immature Western Swamp-hens (Calamón Común / Porphyrio porphyrio), Sedge Warbler (Carricerin Común / Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) and Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis).

On our way around to the second hide over looking Laguna del Trébol we had a smart male 
European Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca), a calling Willow Warbler (Mosquitero Musical / Phylloscopus trochillus), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala) and European Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Chloris chloris).

We didn't see anything new from the hide or at the hide overlooking Laguna del Lirio so we continued on back towards the entrance, I popped up to the hide at the southern end of Laguna del Taraje but apart from a couple of female Mallards with ducklings it was quiet so I caught up with Karen and Robert who had found a nice Geranium Bronze (Cacyreus marshalli).

At just after 13:00 Pepe let us all out and we went for something to eat before popping around to the waste ground at the back of the reserve where we hoped for a 
Monarch (Danaus plexippus) or two but due to the high winds I was not confident, however we found a slightly more sheltered spot were pleased to see a couple chasing each other and when we went behind the bank where they disappeared we found them mating.

We also saw a couple more
Clouded Yellows x2, a Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) x1 and a Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator) before we returned to the car and headed off along the coast to Velez Malaga and then inland to a spot near Zafarraya where we looked for some Orchids.

At our first stop we found at least 150 spikes of
Conical (Neotinea conica), Yellow Bee (Ophrys lutea) x200+, Sawfly (Ophrys tenthredinifera) x5, Mirror (Ophrys speculum) x25+, Bumble-bee (Ophrys bombyliflora) x12+, Giant (Himanthoglosum Robertiana) x75+, Fan-lipped (Anacamptis collina) x60+ and Pink Butterfly Orchid (Orchis papilionacea) x80+.

In the same area we also saw 
Spanish Festoon (Zerynthia rumina) x4 and Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) x2 before we continued on a few KMs to another spot where we found lots of not yet in flower Sword-leaved Helleborine (Cephalanathera longifolia) x120+.

As we drove to Loja and then back to the house we had a pair of Bonelli's Eagles (Aguila Perdicera / Aquila faciatus), Montagu's Harrier (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus), Iberian  Magpie (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki) and Eurasian Hoopoe (Abubilla Común / Upupa epops).

Fuente de Piedra in Malaga Province, Near Moraleda and Huétor Fields in Granada Province, Spain.

Out and about birding with Karen and Robert as there wasn't enough sun for many butterflies.

The day didn't start well as when we went out to the car we found that we had a flat and it was not easy to change as it was on the right hand rear which meant getting to the spare was much more difficult but eventually I manged to get the jack out and raise the car far enough to get the spare out and do the change with some help from Katherine a friend / neighbour who lent us a second jack.

On our way out of Huétor we stopped to get the Tyre repaired but as there was a long slice caused by some metal in the wall it had to be a replacement.

We were soon on our way and in the car park at Fuente, it was cool and windy unfortunately but dry for the moment so we checked the pool and marshy area along the entrance road and saw Greater Flamingo's (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Northern Shoveler (Cuchara Común / Spatula clypeata), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenuela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Pied Avocet (Avoceta Común / Recurvirostra avosetta), Black-tailed Godwit (Aguja Colinegra / Limosa limosa), Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), Little Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Chico / Thinornis dubius), Common Redshank (Archibebe Común / Tringa totanus), Black-headed Gull (Gaviota Reidora / Chroicocephalus ridibundus), Gull-billed Tern (Pagaza Piconegra / Gelochelidon nilotica), Barn (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) and Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Cecropis daurica), Western House (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum) and Sand Martin (Avión Zapador / Riparia riparia), Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Cetti's Warbler (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti) and White Stork (Ciguena Blanca / Ciconia ciconia).

We returned to the car briefly to put on some extra layers as it was a damn cold wind before cutting across to the board walk where we saw Marbled Duck (Cerceta pardilla / Marmaronetta angustirostris), Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus), Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra) and Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata) before walking along the Tamarisks and out to a spot where we could see the main Laguna, here we had amazing views of the thousands of Greater Flamingo's, Common Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus), Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi), Stripe-necked Terrapin (Mauremys leprosa) and met up with three Spanish Birders from Malaga way, friend Jacinto Villalvalla his two colleagues who I do know but can't remember their names, Sorry.

After we had finished chatting we moved on up to the Mirador and scanned the main Laguna again finding the Marsh Sandpiper (Archibebe Fino / Tringa stagnatilis) on the nearest bit of shore line with several Stilts, Common Redshank and a Common Greenshank (Archibebe Claro / Tringa nebularia), Lesser Black-backed Gull (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus), lots more Gull-billed Terns, Common Shelduck (Tarro Blanco / Tadoma tadorna) and a Western Marsh Harrier (Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental / Circus aeruginosus).

In the bushes surrounding the Mirador we added Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada), Common Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus) and European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis).

We walked around to the back laguna's, at the first small screen we had a fine male Red-crested Pochard (Pato Colorado / Netta rufina), Northern Raven (Cuervo grande / Corvus corax) and lots of Rabbit (Conejo / Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Around at Observatorio El Laguneto
we picked up several Blue-headed (Yellow) (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava flava), British (Yellow) (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava flavissima) and Spanish (Yellow) Wagtails in the grass areas in front of the hide and out on the water we added Common Pochard (Porrón Europeo / Aythya ferina), Gadwall (Anade Friso / Mareca strepera), White-headed Duck (Malvasia Cabeciblanca / Oxyura leucocephala), Black-necked Grebe (Zampullín Cuellinegro / Podiceps nigricollis), Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egretta garzetta), Short-toed Snake Eagle (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Eurasian Hoopoe (Abubilla Común / Upupa epops) and European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Europeo / Merops apiaster).

We popped into Observatorio de las Palomas but we added nothing new and the wind was horrible there so we pushed on around to the visitors Center which was open so we used the facilities and I bought a hat before returning  to the car after a brief check on the roadside pool adding just a single Whiskered Tern (Fumarel Cariblanca / Chilidonias hybridus) before heading into Fuente for a coffee.

Later we drove around to Mirador de Cantarranas where we had good views of the lake and the Flamingo's, on the way back to the motorway we had a group of Lesser Kestrels (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni).

As we headed back towards home the weather started to get worse but even though we hit a few heavy showers we decided to go and have a look at some Orchids near to Moraleda, at this site we saw at least 8 spikes of the beautiful Dark Spider (Ophrys incubacea), a couple of 100 Bumble-bee (Ophrys bombyliflora), Mirror (Ophrys speculum), Sawfly (Ophrys tenthredinifera), Yellow Bee (Ophrys lutea) and Fan-lipped (Anacamptis collina) as well as Southern Red Bartsia (Parentucellia latifolia) and Wild Grape Hyacinth (Muscari neglectum).

We returned to the car as the rain was getting quite heavy and started to head towards Huétor Fields, not far along the track we came across a
Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa) and a very smart European Bee-eater sat in a bush enjoying the rain, it was fanning it's tail and catching the water for a wash and stayed there to allow us to get some photo's.

We continued on and popped into the fields at Huétor to see what was around but it was quiet and we only managed to see the 2
Black-winged Kites (Elanio Común / Elanus caeruleus) before the rain returned and we headed back to the house seeing a migrating group of European Bee-eater sat on the roadside wires resting.
