Huétor Fields and Presa y Meandros del Genil, Granada Province, Spain.

A couple of runs out with Paqui.

Riofrio, Granada Province, Spain.

A wonderful evening walk with Paqui and Yanira along the Riofrio to its source.

After a day around the house I met up with Paqui and her daughter Yanira and we headed out along the A92 to the village of Riofrio where Paqui parked near the town and we had a nice walk out to the Nacimiento de Riofrío.

We walked back to the car after a while and then Paqui and Yanira set up the table next to a bench where we had a really nice picnic with Tomato Salad, Aioli, Tortilla and Calamari, amazing.

Sierra Nevada and Presa y Meandros del Genil, Granada Province, Spain.

We were up and out early and on our way up to the Sierra Nevada after getting Coffee and Breakfast at Café bar Zole, we made our way straight up to the Hoya De La Mora car parks.

Our first spot was nearby where we checked the Pines and crags just to the NW of the parking spot and started the list with several Spanish Ibex (Cabra montés / Capra pyrenaica hispanica), Common (Vencejo Común / Apus apus) and Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus), Red-billed Chough (Chova Piquirroja / Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros)House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs) and Rock Bunting (Escribano Montesino / Emberiza cia).

We walked up to the Barrier and had planned to walk out on the Hoya de San Juan track but there were still some large areas of lying snow so we stayed on the main track and soon found several 
Northern Wheatears (Collalba Gris / Oenanthe oenanthe), a pale morph Booted Eagle (Aguila Calzada / Aquila penntuas), Northern Raven (Cuervo grande / Corvus corax) x6, Red-billed Chough (Chova Piquirroja / Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) x4, Eurasian Skylark (Alondra Común / Alauda arvensis), Tawny Pipit (Bisbita Camprstre / Anthus campestris), Eurasian Crag Martin (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris), Rock Sparrow (Gorrión Chillón / Petronia petronia), Common Linnet (Pardillo Común / Linaria cannabina), Small White (Pieris rapae) x3, Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) x2, Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) x4, Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) x19, Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) x7, Wall Brown (Lasiommata megera) x2 and Hummingbird Hawkmoth (Macroglossum stellatarum) x4.

We reached a spot in the track where we were about level with the Virgen de las Nieves at (2600 m) where we found a comfortable rock each and started to scan the distant ridges, we had Griffon Vultures (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), a Golden Eagle (Águila Real / Aquila chrysaetos) and eventually I picked up an adult Bearded Vulture (Quebrantahuesos / Gypaetus barbatus) but unfortunately Derek didn't get on this bird as it dropped below the skyline quickly, however we stuck it out and had a distant at first subadult bird which eventually came in quite a bit closer.

We dropped back to the car where we had a coffee before dropping to a spot out on the Ski Slopes, we parked and walked out for km or so finding several pairs of Common Whitethroats (Curruca Zarcera / Sylvia communis), Eurasian Wren (Chochin paleártico / Troglodytes troglodytes), Rock Bunting and a 3rd Bearded Vulture but this one was a full Juvenile.

Further down the hill we took the old road around to Güéjar Sierra making a few stops on the way and added Long-tailed (Mito Común / Aegithalos caudatus), Coal (Carbonero Garrapinos / Periparus ater) and Eurasian Blue Tit (Herrerillo Común / Cyanistes caeruleus), Western Bonelli's Warbler (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli), Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada), Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Europeo / Certhia brachydactyla), Mistle Thrush (Zorzal Charlo / Turdus viscivorus), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), European Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis) and European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus).

Other species were Barton's Orchid (Dactylorhiza insularis), Sword-leaved Helleborine (Cephalanathera longifolia), Southern Knapweed (Centaurea pullata), Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria), Yellow Phlomis (Phlomis lychnitis), Wild Carrot (Daucus carota), Purple Phlomis (Phlomis purpurea), White Rockrose (Helianthemum apenninum) and Large Blue Flax (Linum narbonense).

Sierra de Loja and Huétor Fields, Granada Province, Spain.

I met Derek down at Café bar Zole where we had coffee and some breakfast before heading up down to the Rio Genil where I dropped Derek off for a while as I had to meet friends Jan and Garry who were dropping off their car to the Mechanic's in Huétor and I was running them back up to their house in Realenga.

I returned to Derek and we headed off up Sierra de Loja, we made our way steadily out to the far crags, on the way we had views of Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa), Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Thekla's Lark (Cogujada Montesina / Galerida theklae), Spectacled Warbler (Curruca Tomillera / Curruca conspicillata), European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola), Common Linnet (Pardillo Común / Linaria cannabina), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), European Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Chloris chloris), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis) and Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra).

As we worked our way along the crags we had Mallards (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos) on the pools below us, Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Common Swift (Vencejo Común / Apus apus), Eurasian Crag Martin (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris), Eurasian Hoopoe (Abubilla Común / Upupa epops), Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros)Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Blue-rock Thrush (Roquero Solitario / Monticola solitarius)Black (Collalba Negra / Oenanthe leucura) and Western Black-eared Wheatear (Collalba Rubia Occidental / Oenanthe hispanica), Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Melodious (Zarcero políglota / Hippolais polyglotta), Western Orphean (Curruca Mirlona Occidental / Curruca hortensis) and Western Subalpine Warbler (Curruca Carrasqueña Occidental / Curruca iberiae), Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), Rock Sparrow (Gorrión Chillón / Petronia petronia), Rock Bunting (Escribano Montesino / Emberiza cia), Small White (Pieris rapae), Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) and the first of several Spanish Ibex (Cabra montés / Capra pyrenaica hispanica).

At the far end of the section we stopped again and after quite a wait I was pretty sure I saw a ♀ Common Rock Thrush (Roquero Roja / Monticola saxatilis) being chased by a Black Redstart but it disappeared too quickly to be positive, however a little while later we had a very smart ♂ do several display flights of the very tops of the cliffs.

After watching the Common Rock Thrush, we continued on out to a high point a KM or so further on where we spent an hour or so looking for raptors and picked up Booted (Aguila Calzada / Aquila penntuas) x2 and Short-toed Snake Eagle (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus) x3, Common Cuckoo (Cuco Común / Cuculus canorus) x2, Red-billed Chough (Chova Piquirroja / Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) and Spanish Ibex.

On our way back along the crags I picked up a nice 
♀ Common Rock Thrush and then a few minutes later a second  bird which showed very nicely for around 15 minutes.

On the way back down the hill we stopped at the Charca del Negro where Blue / Common Emperor (Anax imperator), Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus), Knapweed Fritillary (Melitaea phoebe) and an Ocellated Lizard (Timon lepidus).

Just a little further down we spent a while in a small roadside dell as I wanted to see if there were any Butterflies around, species found included Provence Orange-tip (Anthocharis euphenoides), Spanish Festoon (Zerynthia rumina), Black-veined White (Aporia crataegi), Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas), Southern Brown Argus (Aricia cramera), Southern Gatekeeper (Pyronia cecilia) and Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina).

On the lower track up to the middle quarry we had some very nice views of Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum), a couple of Dartford (Curruca Rabilarga / Curruca undata), Sardinian (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala) and Western Bonelli's (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli)Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Europeo / Certhia brachydactyla), Blue Spotted Hairstreak (Satyrium spini), Spanish Gatekeeper (Pyronia bathseba), Sedum mucizonia, Thapsia villosaPyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalia),

We left the mountain and headed out onto the Lucerne fields were we watched the Montagu's Harriers (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus) from the road and then drove out to the gate, on the way we added European Turtle Dove (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), Common Swift (Vencejo Común / Apus apus), Little Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Chico / Thinornis dubius), Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus), Short-toed Snake EagleLittle Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), Eurasian Magpie (Urraca Común / Pica pica), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Cecropis daurica), Common Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), Spanish (Yellow) (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba) and Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi).

Later in the evening Derek and I were heading down to Huétor for something to eat, on the way we returned to the Lucerne Fields to meet up with Paqui as Derek wanted to say hello. 
We went down to Huétor and then later returned to the house where we could hear the local Red-necked Nightjar (Chotacabras Cuellirrojo / Caprimulgus ruficollis) calling before we turned in after a successful day.
