Archidona area, Malaga Province.

A day with the masters of Orchids.

Yellow Bee Orchids (Ophrys lutea).
I spent a cracking morning with some of the top Orchid botanists in our area and listened to a couple of very interesting lectures given by Manuel Becerra Parra and Jose Antonio Díaz Romera.
Pink Butterfly Orchid (Anacamptis papilionacea).
It was also good to meet some old faces and met some new ones who had up till then just been names and photo's on Facebook.
Orchis x gennarii (O. papilionacea x O. champagneuxii).
Later we went for lunch and the out doing some photography, we visited a site just out side of the town of Archidona. In the first few minutes Damián Quintana showed us a superb patch of Pink Butterfly Orchids (Anacamptis papilionacea) with a few Yellow Bee Orchids (Ophrys lutea) dotted in with them.
Pheasant's Eye (Adonis annua).
We continued walking around the site and soon added Southern Early Purple (Androrchis Olbiensis), Mirror (Ophrys speculum) and then the star of the day for me 6 spikes of the stunning hybrid Orchis x gennarii (O. papilionacea x O. champagneuxii).
Mirror Orchid (Ophrys speculum).
We again continued on and found Sawfly Orchid (Ophrys tenthredinifera), Conical Orchid (Neotinea conica), more of the Hybrids and lots of other wildflowers including Pheasant's Eye (Adonis annua), Grey-leaved Cistus (Cistus albidus), Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum) and Shepherds Needles (Scandix pecten-veneris).
Sawfly Orchid (Ophrys tenthredinifera).
On the wonder around the area I also picked up a few bird species as well including Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica) and Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica).

On the roadside bank we found plenty of Yellow Bee Orchid (Orquídea Abejera / Ophrys lutea) as well as a few of both Sawfly (Flor de avispa / Ophrys tenthredinifera subsp tenthredinifera) and Mirror Orchids (Ophrys speculum subsp speculum) and on the motorway embankment several past their best Giant Orchid (Himantoglossum robertiana). Birds included Harry's first lst lifer of quite a few for the day a Crested Tit (Herrerillo Capuchino / Parus cristatus), as well as Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Bonelli's Warbler (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs) and more Spotless Starlings.

We continued on up the hill and parked at the turning circle a couple of KMs along the track and then walked up to the small disused quarry, on the way to the parking spot Harry asked if we had a chance of seeing any Iberian Magpies in the area and just as I said we should the first bird of a small flock flew into view, if only it happened like that every time!!!!

As soon as we arrived at Charca Martin picked up a very smart male Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush (Roquero Roja / Monticola saxatilis) and as we walked around the pool Harry picked up a surprising Great Spotted Cuckoo (Crialo Europeo / Clamator gladarius) and a few minutes later we had a calling Common Cuckoo (Cuco Común / Cuculus canorus). Our last stop on the hill was back up at the quarry but on the way down we had a nice Montpellier Snake (Malpolon monspessulanus) come across the road. Near the quarry we were hoping to connect with the resident Eagle Owl (Buho Real / Bubo bubo) but had to make do with a female Orphean Warbler (Curruca Mirlano / Sylvia hortensis) and some passing European Bee-eaters (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster).
Looking South.
We dropped down off the hill into Loja where we called in at El Cerro bar and Harry made quick work of a Lomo Completo baguette, Martin and I eventually caught up and we headed out to the fields near Huétor Tajar where we boosted the list with views of Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Little Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Chico / Charadrius dubius), Yellow Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Crested Lark, Short-toed Lark (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Cattle Egret (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis), Corn Bunting (Triguero / Emberiza calandra) and Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis). Donington Pool, Albrighton, Shropshire, UK.

A walk around my old UK local Patch.

Treecreeper (Agateador Norteño / Certhia familiaris).
I had a short walk from my Mom's house down to Donington Pool and the nearby meadows which apart from a newish path that was laid through the meadow it had not changed very much. On the pool there was very little except for a few domestic ducks, a few Mallards (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), a Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus) and a couple of Barn Swallows (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica).
I walked along the track up towards the church and then out on to the meadow and down to the pool near St Cuthberts Well where I picked up a Common Chiffchaff (Mosquitero Común / Phylloscopus collybita) which was singing loudly from the top of nearby Alder trees, Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Wren (Chochin / Troglodytes troglodytes) and a screeching Jay (Arrendajo / Garrulus glandarius).
Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula).
I walked along the track to the first bridge where I watched a nice Treecreeper (Agateador Norteño / Certhia familiaris) singing from another Alder tree as well as Great Spotted Woodpecker (Pico Picapinos / Dendrocopos major), Great (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Coal (Carbonero Garrapinos / Parus ater) and Blue Tits (Herrerillo Común / Parus caeruleus), Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Sylvia atricailla), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Common Starling (Estornino Pinto / Sturnus vulgaris) and Goldcrest (Reyezuelo Sencillo / Regulus regulus).
Again I continued on and came to the second bridge and added Grey Wagtail (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula), Carrion Crow (Corneja Negra / Corvus corone), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Mistle Thrush (Zorzal Charlo / Turdus viscivorus) and a male Yellowhammer (Escribano Cerillo / Emberiza citrinella).
Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus).
I left the meadow and spent a nice hour or so with Brenda and Keith (sister and brother in-law) before heading back to Moms where I got some shots of the local Blackbirds and Woodpigeons.
