A run down to the coast at Velez Malaga and the along to Charca for the evening opening.

We set off and headed along the motorway to the Venta del Rayo junction off the A92 and then down the western side of the Sierra de Loja to a spot in the Oak woodlands where John an I went for a walk and Pam did some drawing, as we walked we saw
Cardinal Fritillary (Argynnis pandora),
Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas),
Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus),
Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina), Purple Hairstreak ( Quercus),
Southern Brown Argus (Aricia cramera),
Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea) and Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii).

On the bird front we saw 3
Griffon Vultures (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), a pale morph Booted Eagle (Aguila Calzada / Aquila penntuas), Iberian Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real / Lanius meridionalis),
Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Europeo / Certhia brachydactyla),
Western Bonelli's Warbler (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli) heard only, Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus),
Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula) and
European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus).
After getting a coffee nearby we pushed on along the coast to our next stop at Cerro Gordo, just after we turned off the main Coast road we passed under some pine trees and I got a very brief view of a Two-tailed Pasha (Charaxes jasius) but as hard as we searched we could not find it or any more during the visit but we did see Desert Orange-tip (Colotis evagore), Spanish Ibex (Cabra montés / Capra pyrenaica hispanica), Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa), Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) and Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor).

We again continued on east heading for Charca Suarez, on the way we stopped in Almuñécar for a very nice Menu del Dia before pushing on the the fields out side the Charca reserve as we were still too early for the 18:00 opening, on the fields we saw
Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Long Skimmer (Orthetrum trinacria) and I saw a single fast flying Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus).

We moved over to the beach and went for a walk to an area where we could view two pools on the Golf Course, here we saw
Western Swamp-hen (Calamón Común / Porphyrio porphyrio),
Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra),
Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus),
Little Grebe (Zampullín Común /
Tachybaptus ruficollis), Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos),
Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Black-headed Gull (Gaviota Reidora / Chroicocephalus ridibundus),
Common Redstart (Colirroja Real / Phoenicurus phoenicurus), Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata),
European Turtle Dove (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur),
European Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula) and an
African Grass Blue (Zizeeria knysna).

Just before 18:00 we went down to the Charca Entrance and a few minutes later Manu came and opened up, from the entrance we walked to the hide over looking Laguna Taraje finding
Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos),
Eurasian Teal (Cerceta Común / Anas crecca),
Northern Shoveler (Cuchara Común / Spatula clypeata), Gadwall (Anade Friso / Mareca strepera),
Common Moorhen,
Red-knobbed (Focha Moruna / Fulca cristata) and
Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra),
Common Blackbird,
European Turtle Dove and
Common Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus).

We moved around to the other end of the laguna and from that hide we saw another
Western Swamp-hen before moving on.

Laguna del Alamo Blanco was quiet but gave us 2x
White Stork (Ciguena Blanca / Ciconia ciconia),
Common Kingfisher (Martin Pescador Común / Alcedo atthis),
Common Woodpigeon,
Lesser Emperor (Anax parthenope), Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea) and Black Percher (Diplacodes lefebvrii). |

We continued on around the reserve and from the main hide overlooking Laguna de las Aneas we added Common Pochard (Porrón Europeo / Aythya ferina), Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus), Garganey (Cerceta Carretona / Spatula querquedula), Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum), Barn Swallow, Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii), Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi) and Stripe-necked Terrapin (Mauremys leprosa).

As we walked back around towards the exit we saw a
Spotted Flycatcher which was eating a
Blue / Common Emperor (Anax imperator) and a calling Eurasian Wryneck (Torcecuello / Jynx torquilla) which I got brief views of. |

We exited the reserve and headed back to the house, just before we got there we saw a
Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua) on the wooden electric pole at the end of the road.
