Paqui and I headed off early to meet Barbara and Derek Etherton in Campillos for a mornings birding, we were all at the meeting point on time but it was still quite dark so after putting all our stuff in the Derek and Barbara's car we headed off for some breakfast in the town.

Laguna Dulce.

After a coffee and a tostarda we went to Laguna Dulce but took the back track first as Derek and Barbara had done this route a few days earlier and had seen a good number of waders on the small areas of water behind the reeds which can't be seen from the hide, we found Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenuela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Little Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Chico / Thinornis dubius), Common (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos) and Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Common Redshank (Archibebe Común / Tringa totanus), Ruff (Combatiente / Calidris pugnax), Curlew Sandpiper (Correlimos Zarapitin / Calidris ferruginea) and Little Stint (Correlimos Menudo / Calidris minuta).

We continued on around the back track to the road on the way we added Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), a distant Black-winged Kite (Elanio Común / Elanus caeruleus), a couple of passage European Honey Buzzards (Aberjero Europeo / Pernis apivorus) and 3 Black Kites (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans) which were also heading west, Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs) and just before we reached the road we had a big flock of Spanish Sparrows (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis).

Our next stop was on the other side of the main road at Laguna del Cerero, it was quieter but we did add Western Olivaceous Warbler (Zarcero bereber / Iduna opaca), Sand Martin (Avión Zapador / Riparia riparia), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula) along with another Purple Heron, Western Marsh Harrier, Greater Flamingo's, Red-veined Darters and Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea).

We moved on again to the Laguna Salada where there were more Greater Flamingo's and at least 3x Common Shelduck (Tarro Blanco / Tadoma tadorna), 3x Spotted Redshank, 2x Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), a ♀ Montagu's Harrier and ♀ Banded Groundling (Brachythemis leucosticta).

A bit further along the road we stopped at the Laguna Capacete and took a track to check some waders, here we found Common Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Grande / Charadrius hiaticula) and a Dunlin (Correlimos Común / Calidris alpina) which were new for the day list along side more Black-winged Stilt, Little Ringed Plover, Common, Green Sandpiper and Curlew Sandpiper.

Other species were Eurasian Coot, Greater Flamingo, Little Grebe, Griffon Vulture, European Bee-eater, Common Kestrel, Crested Lark, Barn and Red-rumped Swallow, Spotless Starling, European Stonechat,House Sparrow, Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and European Goldfinch.

Our final stop of the morning was around Campillos where we had brilliant views of a stunning Long-eared Owl (Búho Chico / Asio otus) which sat very nicely for us, a nice way to end the mornings birding.

Eurasian Eagle Owl (Búho Real / Bubo bubo) 2 of the 4 birds seen.

Paqui and I headed out to a spot near the Presa where we again set up the chairs and from a good distance watched the Eurasian Eagle Owls (Búho Real / Bubo bubo), which were sitting out on the far side of the valley.

Some of the other more interesting species seen included Black-crowned Night Heron (Marinete Común / Nycticorax nycticorax), Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oropéndola Europea / Oriolus oriolus), European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Europeo / Merops apiaster), Iberian Green Woodpecker (Pito ibérico / Picus sharpei), Eurasian Crag Martin (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris) and Iberian Magpie (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki).

On our way off the site we had a very well behaved Red-necked Nightjar (Chotacabras Cuellirrojo / Caprimulgus ruficollis) which was sitting in the centre of the road and was well lit up by the headlights.

I met Paqui down on the fields, where we set up the chairs and watched the sun go down. During this visit we saw an increase in the wintering flock of Little Bustards (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax) when 8 birds flew over us just as it was going dark.

Other species included Eurasian Stone Curlew (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus) x19, a fly over Common Snipe (Agachadiza Común / Gallinago gallinago) and Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata) and Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula).

Another evening visit to a spot near the Presa for Owls and the Stars.

 

Paqui and I went to a spot near the Presa to chill for a while after a busier day than expected, we arrived and set up the chairs.

The most obvious species when we arrived were European Bee-eaters (Abejaruco Europeo / Merops apiaster), with a flock of around 40 birds heading to roost in some riverside trees.

As we sat there we also had views of the 4 Eurasian Eagle Owls (Búho Real / Bubo bubo) again, at least 2 Red-necked Nightjars (Chotacabras Cuellirrojo / Caprimulgus ruficollis), Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), European Turtle Dove (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum), Common Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Cetti's (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti) and Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala), Iberian Magpie (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus) 100s, Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs) and European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis).

Whilst there we could hear lots of calling Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi) down in the river below us, after dark we headed back to my place, on the way we saw a couple more Red-necked Nightjars.

After we returned to the car and then headed down to Paqui's for a coffee, later we had lunch and then in the evening we went up to Hacho where I set a single Moth trap.

Once the trap was on we went to the main track, set up the chairs and spent a while watching the stars, whilst there we also saw and heard Common Woodpigeon, Black Kite (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans), Eurasian Scops Owl (Autillo Europeo / Otus scops), Iberian Magpie, Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada), Sardinian Warbler and Common Blackbird.

I met Paqui at the Walnut trees and we walked out to the gates and back as we usually do and  in between our chats, we saw Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), European Turtle (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur) and Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), 3x Little Bustards (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax) the first sighting of the small wintering flock, Little Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Chico / Thinornis dubius), Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), Eurasian Hoopoe (Abubilla Común / Upupa epops), European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Europeo / Merops apiaster), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), Iberian (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki) and Eurasian Magpie (Urraca Común / Pica pica), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula), Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Melodious Warbler (Zarcero políglota / Hippolais polyglotta), Barn (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) and Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Cecropis daurica), Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum), Cetti's (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti) and Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola), Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Grey (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea), Spanish (Yellow) (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), European Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Chloris chloris), Common Linnet (Pardillo Común / Linaria cannabina), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis) and Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra).
