Deb and I were up early and on our way North after a very pleasant evening and good nights sleep, Thanks Sue and Dave.

On the way up to our first stop we saw Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen), Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca), Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus), Little Raven (Corvus mellori), Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala), Red-rumped Parrot (Psephotus haematonotus), Spotted Dove (Spilopelia chinensis), Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla), Australian Ibis (Threskiornis molucca), Silver Gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae), Spotted Harrier (Circus assimilis), Little Corella (Cacatua sanguinea), Willie-wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris), Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes) and made a stop for some breakfast.

We continued on around to Port Clinton and to the first of the spots at the Jetty where we checked the area Dave had told us about and as he also said if the Grey-tailed Tattler (Tringa brevipes) sees us first it would fly out to the Mangroves and away, it did exactly that but not before I had nice flight views and slightly obscured views in a small Mangrove, but it then went deeper in.

In this area we also had Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis), Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus), Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles), Australian Crake (Porzana fluminea), Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus), Great Crested (Thalasseus bergii) and Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida), White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae), Australian Ibis (Threskiornis molucca), New Holland (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), Spiny-cheeked (Acanthagenys rufogularis) and Singing Honeyeater (Gavicalis virescens), Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata), Willie-wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) and Tree Martin (Petrochelidon nigricans).

We moved a short way down the coast to another spot, on the way we saw a group of birds on the beach which included Australian (Gelochelidon macrotarsa) and Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia) and out on the sea both Little Pied (Microcarbo melanoleucos) and Little Black Cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris), we reached the far end of the beach where the tide was still too high for much to be there so we moved on.

We went through Port Wakefield again and after having a spot of lunch we went out to Bald Hill beach, the tide was still a tad too high for there to be many waders and after a 4x4 went along the track next to the beach there wasn't much of anything after all the birds flushed up, before this we recorded Grey Teal (Anas gracilis), Red-capped Plover, Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), Red Knot (Calidris canutus), Red-necked Stint, Silver and Pacific Gull, Australian Fairy (Sternula nereis), Caspian, Whiskered and Great Crested Tern, Little Pied, Little Black and Pied Cormorant (Phalacrocorax varius), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), White-faced Heron, Great White Egret (Ardea alba), Singing Honeyeater, White-fronted Chat (Epthianura albifrons), Australasian Pipit (Anthus novaeseelandiae), Welcome Swallow and Tree Martin.

We made a brief stop off at Port Gawler beach road, we didn't add anything new to the list but did get nice views of Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Red-kneed Dotterel.

We returned Eagle View where whilst I was on the Laptop I picked up Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus funereus), Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans), Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus), Superb Fairywren (Malurus cyaneus), Grey Shrikethrush (Colluricincla harmonica), Grey Fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa) and Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes).

We were all up earlyish and after breakfast (a small one after the roast last night) Dave and Sue were off back home and Deb and I got ready to follow on later but via the Mount Lofty Botanical Gardens.

Around the farm we saw some of the usual species including Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx basalis), Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla), Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus), Little Corella (Cacatua sanguinea), Striated Thornbill (Acanthiza lineata), Little Raven (Corvus mellori), Eurasian Blackbird (Turdus merula), House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), Superb Fairywren (Malurus cyaneus), Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) and Little Wattlebird (Anthochaera chrysoptera).

As we drove out to the Gardens we added Shining Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx lucidus), Willie-wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata), Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra), Hardhead (Aythya australis) and both Australian (Threskiornis molucca) and Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis).

We arrived at the Gardens where we were going to try to find the elusive Bassian Thrush (Zoothera lunulata) and they lived up to their reputation and remained elusive for the entire visit unfortunately, however we did see Common Bronzewing (Phaps chalcoptera), Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris), White-throated Treecreeper (Cormobates leucophaea), Grey Shrikethrush (Colluricincla harmonica), Grey Fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa), Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae), Western Whistler (Pachycephala fuliginosa), White-browed Scrubwren (Sericornis frontalis), Brown Thornbill (Acanthiza pusilla), Crescent Honeyeater (Phylidonyris pyrrhopterus), Australian Admiral (Vanessa itea), Common Brown (Heteronympha merope) and Small White (Pieris rapae).

We left the Gardens and then headed for Sue and Dave's, on the way we stopped for some lunch, then we got to their place and after a chat we were soon on our way through the suburbs and out to Whicker Road Wetland which starts as a channel in an industrial area and the out to form several pools.

Along the Channel we found Australian Wood Duck (Chenonetta jubata), Grey (Anas gracilis) and Chestnut Teal (Anas castanea), Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa), Black-tailed Nativehen (Tribonyx ventralis), Australian Crake (Porzana fluminea), Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa), Australasian Swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus), Pied Stilt (Himantopus leucocephalus), Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos), Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles), Red-kneed Dotterel (Erythrogonys cinctus), Silver Gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca) and Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena).

At the far end of the Channel there were a couple of pools which we scanned and found several new species for the day including Black Swan (Cygnus atratus), Australian Shelduck (Tadorna tadornoides), Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus), Hoary-headed Grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus), Spotted Dove (Spilopelia chinensis), Red-necked Avocet (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae), Black-fronted Dotterel (Elseyornis melanops), Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola),  Greenshank (Tringa nebularia), Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata), Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida), Little Pied (Microcarbo melanoleucos) and Little Black Cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris), Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus), Nankeen Night-Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus), White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae), Great White Egret (Ardea alba), Royal Spoonbill (Platalea regia), Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris), Superb Fairywren (Malurus cyaneus), Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata), Singing (Gavicalis virescens) and White-plumed Honeyeater (Ptilotula penicillata) and Willie-wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys).

Our next stop was a few KM away at Barker Inlet Wetlands where we walked both sides of the site seeing most of the species we had already seen including 150+ Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, 12x Greenshanks, Wood Sandpiper and added Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus), Latham's Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii), Australian Hobby (Falco longipennis) and Spotless Crake (Zapornia tabuensis).

We started to make our way back to Sue and Dave's but on the way we cut through an area where Dave had seen African Collared Dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea) in the past, as we headed there he explained that it was by no means certain we would get them as they are difficult but two seconds after he finished he said "HO there's One, no Two".

Sue swung us into a very convenient parking spot, Deb and I managed to get some pictures before we reached the house and later we had a few drinks and a very nice Spag bol.

Today was a rest day at the farm and a chance to catch up with some work on the laptop but as I did this I saw 4 Wedge-tailed Eagles (Aquila audax), 2 were the resident pair which spent time displaying and showing their territorial dominance to the visitors.

Later in the day friends Sue and Dave came down from the North of the city for a meal, we had a nice meal and a good chat telling Dave about our plans for the last few days of my stay which included going north to the Port Clinton area.

Dave suggested that we follow them to their place, then we could do some birding in the Northern areas of Adelaide and then stay with them and head north early the following day from there.

Deb and I were up before 05:00 so that we were on site and at the start point before 06:00, the water level was up a little from the first time and this made going quite difficult at times, there was quite a bit of mist over the lake where we saw several Australian Pelicans (Pelecanus conspicillatus), Black Swans (Cygnus atratus), Australian Shelduck (Tadorna tadornoides), Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa) and Grey Teal (Anas gracilis).

For most of the early part of the walk the sky was full of Australasian Darters (Anhinga novaehollandiae), Little Pied (Microcarbo melanoleucos), Great (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Black (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) and Pied Cormorants (Phalacrocorax varius) as they left their roost site at a nearby lake.

As we carried out the survey we recorded over 60 of the target Southern Emuwrens (Stipiturus malachurus) which is over double the counts of 2022, numbers are thought to have increased drastically due to the flooding of the area and its surroundings after large falls of rain in 2022.

We moved on after taking all our kit off and went to the Café in Finniss for some lunch, it was very busy so we decided to sit outside as it was much quieter, we only managed to add one new species for the day, a White-plumed Honeyeater (Ptilotula penicillata).

Just passed Hahndorf we stopped off at Jones Road Dam where we had good views of a group of at least 8 Blue-billed Ducks (Oxyura australis) along with Musk Duck (Biziura lobata), Grey Teal (Anas gracilis), Australian Wood Duck (Chenonetta jubata), Black Swan (Cygnus atratus), Australian Shelduck (Tadorna tadornoides), Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa), Hardhead (Aythya australis), Hoary-headed Grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus), Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles), Australasian Darter (Anhinga novaehollandiae), Little Corella (Cacatua sanguinea), Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala), Striated Pardalote (Pardalotus striatus), Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca), Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) and Tree Martin (Petrochelidon nigricans).

We continued on adding Long-billed Corella (Cacatua tenuirostris), Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis), White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) and Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae).

We arrived at the Square-tailed Kite (Lophoictinia isura) site and checked in on them, we were pleased to see all three chicks were doing well, both adults were sat up in a nearby tree chilling for a while before they headed out hunting.

We didn't stay long but had good views of all 5 birds before heading back towards Eagle View, on the way back we called at a spot and picked up Varied Sittella (Daphoenositta chrysoptera), Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris), Red-rumped Parrot (Psephotus haematonotus), Weebill (Smicrornis brevirostris), Buff-rumped Thornbill (Acanthiza reguloides), Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax), Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris), White-winged Chough (Corcorax melanorhamphos), Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus), Grey Shrikethrush (Colluricincla harmonica), Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis), Monarch (Danaus plexippus) and Common Brown (Heteronympha merope).

Another cold, wet and foggy start to the day.

The day started very grey and windy, the fog lifted however it remained windy and cold all day, around the farm I saw Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen), House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), Eurasian Blackbird (Turdus merula), Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), Little Raven (Corvus mellori), Grey Fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa), White-browed Scrubwren (Sericornis frontalis), New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), Little (Anthochaera chrysoptera) and Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata), Superb Fairywren (Malurus cyaneus), Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus), Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla), White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) and Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes).

Whilst Deb and I sat and had a coffee with Renate we saw the needed Willie-wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), Tree Martin (Petrochelidon nigricans), Grey Shrikethrush (Colluricincla harmonica), White-naped Honeyeater (Melithreptus lunatus), Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans), Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax), Little Pied Cormorant (Microcarbo melanoleucos), Shining Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx lucidus) and Australian Wood Duck (Chenonetta jubata).

On the way back to the farm we added European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena), Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) and Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus fuliginosus).

A wet start to the day, it got worse before it improved a bit.

During the night I was woken several times by very loud, very close claps of thunder, Lightning and heavy rain so the very grey view down the valley when I got up was no surprise.

Even during the heaviest of the rain the more European species which are used to this type of weather were still on the move including House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), Eurasian Blackbird (Turdus merula) and Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris).

Also out were the flocks of Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus) and Galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla) which were later joined by Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen), Little Raven (Corvus mellori), Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes), White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae), 4x Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax), Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans), Tree Martin (Petrochelidon nigricans), Superb Fairywren (Malurus cyaneus), New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae) and Grey Fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa).

Late in the afternoon I realized that I hadn't seen the required daily Willie-wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys) so I walked the garden where I found a very reluctant to fly Small White (Pieris rapae) and out on the road and lower down the hill Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus fuliginosus) and eventually a Willie-wagtail which was sat on the back of one of the neighbours cows.

Last birds of the day were a small group of Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus funereus), later two of Deb and Ian's friends came up from their place just down the hill, and we enjoyed a really nice Lamb roast and a few drinks.
