Fuerteventura Canary Islands.

Embalse De los Molinos, Barranco de los Molinos and out into the stone deserts.

Spanish Sparrow (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis).

We started the day with a good breakfast and a spot of birding around the hotel where we got good views of a small flock of Spanish Sparrow (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis) in the garden, I had brief look at a Laughing Dove (Streptopelia senegalensis) as it landed on the roof for a couple of seconds, as usual there were loads of Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto) and a single Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis) which flew over calling.
View from the hotel.
Once we were all out at the van we set off to the south/west heading for the Embalse de los Molinos, on the way Mike L had brief views of 2 Stone Curlews (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus) as they flew over the stoney fields just before we mad a stop for a couple of Egyptian Vultures (Alimoche Común / Neophron percnopterus) which were sat on a roadside electric pylon.
Egyptian Vulture (Alimoche Común / Neophron percnopterus).
Continuing on we left the tarmac (again) and drove down towards the Embalse following the Barranco below in a deep gorge, just before we reached the dam wall we picked up one of the target species, a pair of Canary Island Chats (Tarabilla Canaria / Saxicola dacotiae), which were moving between a roadside fence and the rocks opposite and down in the Barranco and on the hillside opposite there were 2 Ruddy Shelducks (Tarro Canelo / Tadorna ferruginea), a Green Sandpiper (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus), Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax) and a couple of Common Buzzards (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo).
Egyptian Vulture (Alimoche Común / Neophron percnopterus).
We move up to the parking spot nearby and then viewed the Embalse from the path out across the dam, from this nice raised observation point we boosted the list with 9+ Grey Herons (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), 28+ Little Egrets (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta), 40+ Black-winged Stilts (Ciguenela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), lots more Ruddy Shelducks, Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Berthelots Pipit (Bisbita Caminero / Anthus berthelotii) and right at the far end singles of both Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus) which was possibly the bird I had seen coming in off the sea yesterday and a Great Egret (Garceta Grande / Egretta alba) which at the time we did not realize was quite so rare as it was.
At the spot for the Vultures.
We next had a walk along the track down the side of the lake, the track is well above the water allowed us to get good views.
Canary Island Chat (Tarabilla Canaria / Saxicola dacotiae) female.
On the way there and back we built the trip and day list with a female looking Eurasian Teal (Cerceta Común / Anas crecca), Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), 2x Greenshank (Archibebe Claro / Tringa nebularia), 1x Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus) and several good sightings of Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis) with one flock numbering 38.
On the track to the Embalse.
Whilst we were walking around the area we also had Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), Vagrant Emperor (Emperatriz emigrante / Anax ephippiger) and Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii).
Ruddy Shelduck (Tarro Canelo / Tadorna ferruginea).
Our next stop was down on the coast were the Barranco de los Molinos runs in to the sea, once we were parked we checked out the fresh water stream which runs there.
Ruddy Shelducks (Tarro Canelo / Tadorna ferruginea).
We found masses of Sahara Bluetail (Ischnura saharensis), a couple of Lesser Emperor (Anax parthenope), 10+ Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea) and Red-veined Darter. Birds included Raven, Berthalots Pipit and a mix of Muscavy Ducks type birds.
Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo).
We moved back north and out on to Tindaya plains where we're spent a couple of hours driving the tracks looking for the target Cream-coloured Courser (corredor Sahariano / Cursorius cursor) and Houbara Bustard (Avutarda Hubara / Chlamydotis undulata).
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis).
Not long after entering the site Mike L found the first pair of Coursers which were quite close to the track at first before moving away slowly.
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis).
We reached the crossroads seeing Barbary Ground Squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) on the way and turned right where we quickly found our second pair of Coursers before continuing along this track for several km adding Spectacled Warbler (Curruca Tomillera / Sylvia conspicillata), Berthalots Pipit, Common Kestrel,  Common Buzzard, Raven and out on the flats on the far side of the large Barranco we had another 3 Cream-coloured Coursers but we could not find any Houbara Bustards so we drove back to the crossroads at a quicker pace so that we would have time to search the road down to the sea.
Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus).
We drove down the track stopping regularly but as hard as we tried we failed to turn rocks into birds but we did not give up and made our way back along the track still stopping and scanning on the way until eventually I found a stunning Houbara which was feeding in amongst some bushes off to our left.
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis).
We all got views of it from inside the van before quietly sneaking around to the back and getting the scopes out of the back.
Great Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Norteño / Lanius excubitor koenigi).
For the next 20 minutes we watched this superb bird feeding before it moved off out into the rocky plains.
Cream-coloured Courser (corredor Sahariano / Cursorius cursor).
Berthelots Pipit (Bisbita Caminero / Anthus berthelotii).
Very happily we left this bird and headed back to the hotel getting a nice tolerant Great Grey Shrike (Acaudón Norteño / Lanius excubitor koenigi) which sat nicely for our cameras.

Fuerteventura Canary Islands.

Catching up with the Others and some good birding.

Berthelots Pipit (Bisbita Caminero / Anthus berthelotii).
I was up and about before light and made my way down to the Car park for the Museo de la Sal at Salinas del Carmen where in the first bit of light I picked out 4 Little Egrets (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta) on the rocky shoreline.
Yellow-legged Gulls (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis).
Once the light got a bit better I had a walk down to the bay next to the Salinas and scanned the rocks again, this time as well as the Egrets I found a single Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), 2 Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), Yellow-legged Gulls (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba) and a couple of quite tolerant Berthelots Pipits (Bisbita Caminero / Anthus berthelotii).
Berthelots Pipit (Bisbita Caminero / Anthus berthelotii).
I went back up to the van and continued on along the same road down into the Barranco del la Torre checking the beach first but apart from the usual Yellow-legged Gulls and a Little Egret it was quiet so I continued inland for a short way checking the disused Palm plantations and scrub areas on the way. It was generally quite but I did find at least 3 Laughing Doves (Streptopelia senegalensis), Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Several Great Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Norteño / Lanius excubitor koenigi), Spanish Sparrow (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis) and a soaring Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo) before returning to the Salt pans.
Barbary Ground Squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus).
I checked the area to the side of the pans this time including the rocky shoreline where I had brief views of a single Whimbrel (Zarapito Trinador / Numenius phaeopus) before it dropped in amongst the rocks and a couple of flighty Painted Ladys (Vanessa cardui) which were getting a bit of a battering in the winds.
Barbary Ground Squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus).

Barbary Ground Squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus).
Time was moving on and I still had not had breakfast so I tried to find a small bar which friends John and Sharon had found on their last visit which did good sandwiches and had Plain Swift (Vencejo Unicolor / Apus unicolor) in the skies above as a big bonus.
I found it and after a couple of coffees and some food I crossed the road and scanned the skyline over the trees around the airport and had a single Swift which showed well. I went back for another coffee and when I returned to the spot found 5 of them fighting the wind.
Whale at Salinas del Carmen.
Next stop was the airport where I met Mike, Judy, Nick, Lynda, Bob and Ann but found that Mike H had not come as he was unwell which was a great shame as his humour and birding skills will be missed greatly.
Lunch with the bay behind us.
We made our way out of the airport parking and back down to the salt pans where I got the others all the species I had seen earlier and we added Sandwich Tern (Charrán Patinegro / Sterna sandvicensis), Rock Pigeon (Paloma Bravia / Columba livia) and Barbary Ground Squirrels (Atlantoxerus getulus) to the list in the car park where they were so used to people they approached to with in a meter or so.
Canarian Potatos.
We had lunch in a bar nearby in Salinas del Carmen called Restaurante Los Caracolitos where we saw Canarian Potatos for the first time.
We moved on and made our way out on to the plains north of Tindaya looking for the Houbara Bustards (Avutarda Hubara / Chlamydotis undulata) but after a couple of hours scanning the area we only came up with Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax), Great Grey Shrike, Berthalots Pipit, Linnet (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina), Yellow-legged Gull at La Huesilla Vantage Point, more Barbary Ground Squirrels and 3 Large Whites (Pieris brassicae).
The gang at La Huesilla Vantage Point.

La Huesilla Vantage Point.
We started to drive towards the hotel in La Oliva but called in at a difficult to view area of water where we found a pair of Ruddy Shelduck (Tarro Canelo / Tadorna ferruginea), lots of Common Moorhens (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Spectacled Warbler (Curruca Tomillera / Sylvia conspicillata), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus) and a Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops).
Tindya Plain.
We arrived at our accommodation and booked in before having a large but very nice meal.

Travelling to and on Fuerteventura, Canary Islands.

Travelling and a bit of birding before the Norfolk Gang arrive tomorrow.

Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax).
Jayne and I set the alarm for 03.00 (silly o'clock) and left the house just before 04.00. Jayne dropped me at just before 05.00 and I joined the queue to check in which took an age or it felt like it to patient me 😀😀 but I did fly through security with out an hitches.
Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax).
The flight left bang on time and arrived 15 minutes early even though it had been quite a turbulent trip.
With the bags collected and van hire very efficiently sorted I was quickly on my way west across the island and I did some birding.
Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax).
I started the list with Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Feral Pigeon (Paloma Bravía / Columba livia), Spanish Sparrow (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis) and 2 Hoopoes (Abubilla / Upupa epops) which flew over the road as I drop towards El Cotillo on the coast. I turned off the main road before the town and took to the tracks and almost straight away I had the first of at least 5 Berthelots Pipit (Bisbita Caminero / Anthus berthelotii), Great Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Norteño / Lanius excubitor koenigi), a couple of Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus) sat on a wire and lots more Collared Doves which were by far the commonest species of the day.
La Huesilla Vantage Point.
I continued along this track getting some brilliant views of several Ravens (Cuervo / Corvus corax) before spending a couple of hours sea watching but finding nothing more exciting than Yellow-legged Gulls (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis).
I cut inland around a deep dry river bed adding another couple of Berthalots Pipits and just before I reached the coast again a stunning Houbara Bustard (Avutarda Hubara / Chlamydotis undulata), which although quite distant was a belting Lifer for my Spanish List.
Houbara Bustard (Avutarda Hubara / Chlamydotis undulata).
After watching the Bustard for nearly an hour as it walked slowly along a ridge feeding I returned to the coast at La Huesilla Vantage Point and spent some more time sea watching with pretty much the same results except this time I did see a few Cory's Shearwater (Pardela Cenicienta / Calonectris diomedea) and a single Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus) which came in off the sea.
I started to drive back towards the Airport and my hotel in Puerto del Rasario, on the way I had a Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo) being mobbed by two more Ravens and quite a few great little Barbary Ground Squirrels (Atlantoxerus getulus) on some walls and Rock piles as well as a couple more Great Grey Shrikes and several Vagrant Emperors (Emperatriz emigrante / Anax ephippiger).
Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus).
I went to the hotel and relaxed for a while before going for a walk to a nearby rocky beach where I found 4 Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), 4 Ruddy Turnstone (Vuelvepiedras Común / Arenaria interpres), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Lesser Black-backed Gull (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus) and a few more Corys Shearwaters.
Barbary Ground Squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus).
I later popped out again for some food but the weather closed in and I got a soaking but did see a nice rainbow.
A good start to the trip, looking forward to the rest of the gangs arrival in the morning.

El Faro, Fuengirola, Malaga Province.

The best sea watching I have had so far in Spain.

Sooty Shearwater (Pardela Sombría / Puffinus griseus).
Jayne went into the Miramar shopping centre and I went just down the road to the hide on the cliff tops at El Faro where it was blowing a gale which meant the birds were coming past quite close in to shore.
Sooty Shearwater (Pardela Sombría / Puffinus griseus).
I sat, tightly squeezed in to the Eastern end of the hide just about staying out of the high winds and during the three hours I was there I managed to see 1x Sooty Shearwater (Pardela Sombría / Puffinus griseus) which was a Spanish Lifer as well as 1500+ Scopoli's / Cory's Shearwater (Pardela Cenicienta / Calonectris diomedea / borealis) and 300+ Balearic Shearwater (Pardela Balear / Puffinus mauretanicus), 1x Pomarine (Págalo Pomarino / Stercorarius pomarinus) and 11x Great Skuas (Págalo Grande / Stercorarius skua), 400+ Northern Gannets (Alcatraz Atlántico / Morus bassanus), 5x Sandwich Terns (Charrán Patinegro / Sterna sandvicensis), 3x Great Cormorant (Cormorán Grande / Phalacrocroax carbo) and all the usual Gulls.
Sooty Shearwater (Pardela Sombría / Puffinus griseus).
Other species seen on the rocks below the hide I also saw Sanderling (Correlimos Tridáctilo / Calidris alba), Kentish Plover (Chorlitejo Patinegro / Charadrius alexandrinus) and a Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta).
Sooty Shearwater (Pardela Sombría / Puffinus griseus).
The best sea watching section I have had since arriving in Spain.

Birding the local patch with Jo Knight from New Zealand.

Iberian Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis).
I met Jo in Granada and we headed straght out into the campo to a spot near La Malaha where we checked out a semi disused Cortijo where we had good views of several Lesser Kestrels (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni) as well as Jackdaws (Grajilla / Corvus monedula), Spotless Starlings (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), House Sparrows (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Common Magpie (Urraca / Pica pica), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Crested Lark (Cogujada / Galerida cristata) and a distant but noisy Iberian Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis).
