Algarinejo area and the Eastern end of Emabalse de Iznajar, Granada Province, Spain.

All four of us go for a couple of very nice river walks.

Northern Goshawk (Azor Común / Accipitor gentillis).

Jayne, Lynn, Steve and I all set off heading North to Algarinejo for the first of two walks we were going to do today, partly looking for dragonflies but also to get a good step count in for Jayne's challenge.

We arrived at the first spot and parked, in the trees near by we started the list off with Iberian  Magpie (Rabilargo / Cyanopica cooki), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Small White (Pieris rapae), Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria), Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) and Copper Demoiselle (Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis) which were particularly common on this river.

Further down we dropped down through the woodlands to the rivers edge, we saw a couple of moths on this darker stretch, a huge Catocala elocata and a much smaller Stegania trimaculata (Dorset Cream Wave).

We continued on along the valley of this superb little river passing open areas, gorges, waterfalls and going in and out of different types of woodland.

During the walk lots of species were seen including Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Barn (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) and Red-rumped Swallows (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica), House (Avión Común / Delichon urbica) and Crag Martin (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris), Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Sylvia atricapilla), Jay (Arrendajo / Garrulus glandarius), Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), White (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba) and Grey Wagtails (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea), Cetti's Warbler (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti), Wren (Chochin / Troglodytes troglodytes), Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Común / Certhia brachydactyla), Great (Carbonera Común / Parus major) and Long-tailed Tits (Mito / Aegithalos caudatus), Great Spotted Woodpecker (Pico Picapinos / Dendrocopos major), Golden Oriole (Oropéndola / Oriolus oriolus) and European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster).

There were quite a few Dragonflies and Butterflies seen along the way as well, these included Blue / Common Emperor (Anax imperator) x 1M, Orange-winged Dropwing (Trithemis kirbyi), White Featherleg (Platycnemis latipes), Small Pincertail (Onychogomphus forcipatus), Western Spectre (Boyeria Irene), Iberian Blue-tail (Ischnura graellsii), Western Willow Spreadwing (Chalcolestes viridis) x 3M, Lang's Short-tailed Blue (Leptotes pirithous), Long-tailed Blue (Lampides boeticus), Lorquin's Blue (Cupido lorquinii), Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) and Iberian Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides feisthameli), Spanish Brown Argus (Aricia cramera), False Ilex Hairstreak (Satyrium esculi), Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus), Bath White (Pontia daplidice), Southern Blue (Polyommatus celina) and Cleopatra (Gonepteryx cleopatra).

At the far end of the walk I went on ahead slightly from the others and found a very nice little bar and by the time Jayne, Lynn and Steve found me I was enjoying a beer.

After there others had had a drink we walked back to the car and then dropped down onto one of the rivers near Zagra where it flows in to the Embalse de Iznajar. on our way down to the start of this second walk we had a very nice Goshawk (Azor Común / Accipitor gentillis) come out of a track side tree and circle around us.

Once down by the dry arm of the lake we walked up stream along the Rio for a couple of KM before we started to spot snakes which Jayne and Lynn were not too bothered about but we we found Brown Rats (Rattus norvegicus) it was time to turn around.

However by this time we had found good numbers of birds including Crag Martin, European Bee-eater, Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops), Blue-rock Thrush (Roquero Solitario / Monticola solitarius), Black Wheatear (Collalba Negra / Oenanthe leucura) and Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa) as well as Viperine Snake (Culebra Viperina / Natrix maura), Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi),  Andalucian Wall Lizard (Podarcis vaucheri), Orange-winged and Violet Dropwings (Trithemis annulata), White Featherleg, Small Pincertail, Epaulet (Orthetrum chrysostigma), Keeled (Orthetrum coerulescens) and Southern Skimmers (Orthetrum brunneum), Copper Demoiselle, Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea) and a single male Mediterranean Bluet (Coenagrion caerulescens) which Lynn found.

Once we were back at the car we headed home and added just a Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo) which flew over the garden.

Moraleda Fields and the Cacín Valley, Granada Province.

Another day with Steve Jones and our camera's.

Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua).

We started the day on the fields near to Moraleda, we stopped to have a quick look at the cages full of Falcons just on the edge of town before going out on to the nearby stubble fields. Straight away we were surrounded by Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops) all of which were very camera shy as were most other species except for a very nice immature Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua) which showed very well and sat for ages for us to take lots of nice photographs.

In the same area we had Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula), Crested (Cogujada / Galerida cristata) and Thekla Larks (Cogujada Montesina / Galerida theklae), Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), Collared (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto) and Turtle Doves (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Ganga Ortega / Pterocles orientalis), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Common Magpie (Urraca / Pica pica), Mistle Thrush (Zorzal Charlo / Turdus viscivorus) and Swallowtail (Papilio machaon).

We decided to leave the fields but planned to return later when it was hotter, so we dropped down into the Valley and went along to the bridge over the Cacín. 

From the bridge we had Copper Demoiselle (Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis) x20M & 15F, a very smart female Orange-winged Dropwing (Trithemis kirbyi) as well as several more males later along the canal, a heard only Golden Oriole (Oropéndola / Oriolus oriolus), Common Crossbill (Piquituerto Común / Loxia curvirostra) on the distant pines, Barn Swallow (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus) and a male Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala) which scolded us from cover along with a Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos).

We spent quite a while there then walking along the track towards the dam and this was where Steve made a very unpleasant discovery. Some complete B*******d had put a young dog in a plastic bag and dumped it under some trees, which was bad enough but had then pinned it down with a large rock to make sure it could not escape . The poor thing had got out of the bag but had died due to being pinned down, some times I do despaired at the blatant cruelty in this country.

Along the track we saw White Featherleg (Platycnemis latipes) x5, Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii), Southern Blue (Polyommatus celina), Small White (Pieris rapae), we also has 2 Black Kites (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans), a pale phase Booted Eagle (Aguila Calzada / Aquila pennatus) and a couple of Hawfinch (Picogordo / Coccotraustes coccotrauetes) do fly overs. Also seen or heard were Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), Long-tailed Tit (Mito / Aegithalos caudatus), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica) and House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica).

Next we spent a short while scanning the Embalse nearby and added Common Pochard (Porrón Común / Aythya ferina), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea) and a Bonelli's Warbler (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli) to the days list.

Again we made just a brief stop at the Rio Cacín near the town but found several new butterfly species for the day list including Long-tailed Blue (Lampides boeticus), Lang's Short-tailed Blue (Leptotes pirithous), Large White (Pieris brassicae) and Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus).

We decided then to return to the fields and check the Almond groves which paid off as we had nice views of a pair of Black-bellied Sandgrouse and managed decent shots of the female before the walked off into an area which was to rough for us to follow using the car as a hide.

We also had Iberian Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides feisthameli) and Iberian Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis) before going to our last location of the day which was at Balsa de Regidor looking for dragonflies.

Bird wise we saw nothing new but added Long Skimmer (Orthetrum trinacria) x1M, Black-tailed Skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum) x8M, Violet Dropwing (Trithemis annulata), Blue / Common Emperor (Anax imperator) x 2M & 1F, Small Red-eyed (Erythromma viridulum) and more Red-veined Darters and Orange-winged Dropwings before heading home.

Malaga Province.

Up to our knees in Dragons and wastes in water.

Steve and I headed out to a spot on the Guadalhorce North of Malaga to look for Dragonflies and other wildlife.

We arrived on site and found that there was a lot more vegetation along the main river and quite a lot more water in a very nice little side tributary.

We were at the spot by 11.00 and left at 17.00 and spent the whole six hours in an area of just a couple of hundred meters of river where we saw Large (Onychogomphus uncatus) x1M, Small (Onychogomphus forcipatus) and Faded Pincertails (Onychogomphus costae) x12M & 3F, Ringed Cascader (Zygonyx torridus) x9M, Blue / Common (Anax imperator) x2 M & 1F and Lesser Emperors (Anax parthenope) x1M, Scarlet (Crocothemis erythraea) and Red-veined Darters (Sympetrum fonscolombii), Orange-winged (Trithemis kirbyi) and Violet Dropwings (Trithemis annulata), Southern (Orthetrum brunneum) x1M and Epaulet Skimmers (Orthetrum chrysostigma) x 2M.

Steve and I started the day off with a look around the fields which was done mainly from the car as Steve had tweeked his back on the flight over.

We did the near fields first along the Rio Vilano and then later out on the mesia road. Species seen included Crested Lark (Cogujada / Galerida cristata), Iberian  Magpie (Rabilargo / Cyanopica cooki), Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops), Turtle Dove (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata) and Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) as well as Iberian Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides feisthameli), Small (Pieris rapae) and Bath Whites (Pontia daplidice), Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x 7M & 4F, Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens) x1M and Iberian Blue-tail (Ischnura graellsii) X 10+.

Later in the afternoon Jayne, Lynn, Steve and I drove over to El Chorro area and parked near one of the bars around the lakes there and made our way out to the starting point of the Caminito del Ray, on this first stretch we saw Night (Marinete Común / Nycticorax nycticorax) and Grey Herons (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus), Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Grey Wagtail (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea), Epaulet Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysostigma) x2M, Striped Grayling (Pseudotergumia fidia), Small White (Pieris rapae) and Spanish Ibex (Cabra pyreaica hispanica).

We were soon up on the raised parts of the walk, the first section was quite tame and not in anyway difficult but the second section was far more like what I was expecting with some dromatic cliffs and drops below the path way and then right near the end the moving bridge which was great.

By the time we cleared the far end I added Blue-rock Thrush (Roquero Solitario / Monticola solitarius), Black Wheatear (Collalba Negra / Oenanthe leucura), Alpine (Vencejo Real / Apus melba) and Pallid Swifts (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus) to the list.

On the way back home or to the bar for something to eat to be a bit more accurate we had Montagu's Harrier (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus), two Red-necked Nightjars (Chotacabras Cuellirrojo / Caprimulgus ruficollis) and a Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua).

I met Lydia and her son James in Antequera and we headed out on to the fields just the other side of the A92 for our first stop and the first birds seen were a family of Little Owls (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua) on a small track side ruin. In the same area we picked up Crested (Cogujada / Galerida cristata), Greater Short-toed (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla) and Calandra Larks (Calandria / Melanocorypha calandra), Stone Curlew (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus) x5, Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus) and a Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo) which was sat on a distant arm of one of the very large watering booms.

Our next stop was for some breakfast in Fuente de Piedra at a nice Spanish bar before we went down to the Lagoons, most of which were bone dry.

We parked and then walked up the steps and around to the view point where we scanned the main lake but as the only water was way off on the eastern side we only managed to get distant views of the few Greater Flamingo's (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus) that remained as well as Jackdaw (Grajilla / Corvus monedula), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), a Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos) which we could hear crocking when we arrived but we did not manage to see it, Scarce Swallowtail (Chupaleches / Iphiclides podalirius feisthameli) and a couple of Red-veined Darters (Sympetrum fonscolombii).

We moved on around to the hides at the side and rear of the center, on the first small pool where I usually see nothing worth while we had a couple of immature Red-crested Pochards (Pato Colorado / Netta rufina) which were still looking quite downy, Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), 2 adult Night Herons (Marinete Común / Nycticorax nycticorax), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), 2x immature Iberian / Southern Grey Shrikes (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis), Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus), a female Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata), Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula) and several Common Swift (Vencejo Común / Apus apus) which passed over head.

From the main hide we added several new species to the day list including Black-headed Gull (Gaviota Riedora / Larus ridibundus), Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Avocet (Avoceta Común / Recurvirostra avosetta), a dozen or so Green (Andarrios Grande / Tringa ochropus) and 8+ Common Sandpipers (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos), Little Ringed Plovers (Chorlitejo Chico / Charadrius dubius), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), a female White-headed Duck (Malvasia Cabeciblanca / Oxyura leucocephala), Grey (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea) and Squacco Heron (Garcilla Cangrejera / Ardeola ralloides) before we checked the last hide and had really nice views of a Western Olivaceous Warbler (Zarcero Pálido Occidental / Hippolais opaca) feeding in the bushes right in front of the hide as well as Stripe-necked Terrapin (Mauremys leprosa), Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi) and more Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

We returned to the Mirador and the dropped down on to the lowere track to make our way back around to the car, on the way we had more Reed Warblers, House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus) and a Cetti's Warbler (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti) which for ths species showed amazingly well and allowed Lydia and James to see it in the scope.

Once we were back at the car we drove down the western side of the lake but added nothing to the list so we took to the fields and headed across country to the dryed out remains of Laguna Dulce, on the way we had Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica), Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Black Kite (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus), Thekla Lark (Cogujada Montesina / Galerida theklae) and a Swallowtail (Papilio machaon), right at the far end of the track the way was block for a short while by a flock of Goats and a young lad on a donkey, he was carrying a dog and texting on his smart phone !!

Our next stop was at the Raptor watch point just off the main Malaga road, as we arrived we watch 20 or so Griffon Vultures (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus) move off to the east and we had a small flock of European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster) but they remained high and hard to see, Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator) and Turtle Dove (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur).

We moved just down the road and parked near the Tajo de Molino and then walked down to the small pools near the bridge were we found star species for the day a fine male Faded Pincertail (Onychogomphus costae) which was unfortunately chased of quickly by one of 4+ male Orange-winged Dropwing (Trithemis kirbyi), in the same area we had Epaulet Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysostigma) x2M, Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x3M & 1F and Blue / Common Emperor (Anax imperator) x1M. We walked down the gorge but thinks were very quiet and we only managed to add Crag Martin (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris), Rock Bunting (Escribano Montesino / Emberiza cia), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Rock Pigeon (Paloma Bravia / Columba livia), Linnet (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina) and Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto) to the list. Things were now getting warm so we decided on a drink and pit stop before heading to Santa Ana train Station and on a bit of rough ground near the bar James and I saw a Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops) in flight but we could not relocate it for Lydia.

On our way to the Station we had a very quick look on an arm of the nearby Embalse but only found a single Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta) for the day list.

We reached the station and I dropped Lydia and James off for their train to Sevilla and headed Home.

Parapanda Folk Festival, Illora, Granada Province.

A late night listening to some superb music.

Jayne and I spent the evening, night and early hours in Illora listing to two exceptional bands which were playing at the 26th Parapanda folk Festival. The first were a group called Acetre and are normally based in Extremadura and they were followed by the Rodríguez Celtic Band who are from Granada City.

Sue, Sam, Carlos and I headed out to east around Granada and out to the far side of the Park where we parked and had a walk.

SORRY, A RANT: The saddest part of today was how badly this stunning spot is treated by the people who visit it for a picnic, there was rubbish every where. I have heard people say that they do it because it keeps someone employed when they have to go and clean up. I think this is a just a sad excuse used by the lazy and ignorant, as I am sure the money spent on cleaning this mess up would be better used to employ someone in some other good way rather than being wasted on the unnecessary cleaning of garbage in the beautiful Spanish country side after these lazy people.

OK RANT OVER and back to the wildlife. In the few hours we were there we only covered about 700m as there were so much to see. We started with some Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo) x20+M & 14+F which were stunning in the sun, there we also some females along with Copper Demoiselle (Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis) x5M & x6F, Western Spectre (Boyeria Irene) x3M and Common Golden Ringed Dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii) x2M.

We moved out on to the meadows and I found a few more Dragons, a couple of male Large Pincertails (Onychogomphus uncatus) x2M, Epaulet Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysostigma) x1M and Southern Skimmer (Orthetrum brunneum) x3M, in the same area we also had Bath White (Pontia daplidice), Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus), Southern Blue (Polyommatus celina), Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus), Tree (Hipparchia statilinus) and Great Banded Graylings (Brintesia circe), Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina), Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) and Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus).

We moved slowly along the river to a disused dam wall at the far end of an area of Hawthorn scrub, on our way through we added Berger's Clouded Yellow (Colias alfacariensis), False Ilex Hairstreak (Satyrium esculi), Spanish Brown Argus (Aricia cramera), Spanish Chalk-hill Blue (Polyommatus albicans), Wood White (Leptidea sinapis), Gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus), Adonis Blue (Lysandra bellargus), High Brown Fritillary (Fabriciana adippe), Iberian Marbled White (Melanargia lachesis), Iberian Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides feisthameli) and Spanish Brown Argus (Aricia cramera).

Birds seen included Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator), Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), Turtle Dove (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), Crag Martin (Avión Roquero / Ptyonoprogne rupestris), Red-rumped Swallow (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica), Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus), Jay (Arrendajo / Garrulus glandarius), Hawfinch (Picogordo / Coccotraustes coccotrauetes), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs) and Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros).

We turned around and started to walk back towards the car and on the way added a Robberfly species, Mantis Species as well as Purple Hairstreak (Favonius Quercus), Comma (Polygonia c-album), Small Skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris), Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) and Mercury Bluet's (Coenagrion mercuriale) x2M to the day list.

Once back at the car we drove back to the house via a bar in Alfacar where we had a late lunch and then went out on the evening to Loja.
