Travelling to Ansó, Pyrenees, Aragon, Spain.*

A day of Butterflies and Orchids, with a few odds and ends thrown in.
Trip Total Day Two, Birds 103, Butterflies 36, Dragonflies 9.

After a 3+ hours 40 winks yesterday afternoon and a good nights sleep I was awake at 06.00 so I packed and headed off north, or at least I tried but I am sure the young lady in may sat-nav took me on the long route to my first stop just to the West of Jaca.

On the way there I started the list with Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Black (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans) and Red Kite (Milano Real / Milvus milvus), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Carrion Crow (Corneja Negra / Corvus corone), Eurasian Magpie (Urraca Común / Pica pica), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Yellow-legged Gull (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis), Purple Heron (Garza Imperial / Ardea purpurea) and a flock of Western Cattle Egret (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis).

I arrived at my first stop of the day which was a wooded area by a river just to the West of Jaca, I parked and straight away I noted masses of Marbled Whites (Melanargia galathea) 100+, Pearly Heath (Coenonympha arcania) 50+, Epipactis helleborine (Thanks to Manuel Becerra Parra for the confirmation), Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalia), Common Cow-wheat (Melampyrum pratense) and Catananche caerulea.

I walked down along the river and found my first Spanish
White Admiral (Limenitis camilla) x1, Wall Brown (Lasiommata megera) x8, Wood (Leptidea sinapis) x3 and Small White (Pieris rapae) x2, Spanish Gatekeeper (Pyronia bathseba) x25+, Spanish Purple Hairstreak (Laeosopis roboris) x1, Common / Southern Blue (Polyommatus icarus / celina) x5, Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) x2 and Cleopatra (Gonepteryx cleopatra) x8.

Bird wise I saw Western Bonelli's Warbler (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli), Eurasian Blackcap (Curruca Capirotada / Curruca capirotada), Common Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), Great Spotted Woodpecker (Pico Picapinos / Dendrocopos major), Great (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Eurasian Blue (Herrerillo Común / Cyanistes caeruleus) and Long-tailed Tit (Mito / Aegithalos caudatus), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Common Chiffchaff (Mosquitero Común / Phylloscopus collybita) and Eurasian Jay (Arrendajo Euroasiático / Garrulus glandarius).

I continued on along the track and out on to a large meadow near the road adding Southern Heath (Melitaea nevadensis), Marsh (Euphydryas aurinia) x1 and Knapweed Fritillary (Melitaea phoebe), Small (Thymelicus sylvestris) and Large Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanus), Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina) and European Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula).

I walked up the road passing the car and then took a track along side the river, here I found 6 spikes of Robust Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza elata), Dark-green Fritillary (Speyeria aglaja) x4, Rock (Hipparchia alcyone) x1 and Great Banded Grayling (Brintesia circe) x6 and around some abandoned farm buildings at the end of the track a couple of Ilex Hairstreak (Satyrium ilicis) and Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) x2.

Iberian Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides feisthameli).
I turned around and walked back a short way and then up on to the road where I continued on away from the car for a short distance adding Weaver's Fritillary (Boloria dia), Iberian Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides feisthameli), Southern White Admiral (Limenitis reducta), Western Clubtail (Gomphus pulchellus) and Eurasian Nuthatch (Trepador Azul / Sitta europaea).

I returned to the car and then headed to another spot further to the west which friend Steve Griffin had also given me where my main target was a new Orchid species for my Spanish list the 
Marsh Helleborine (Epipactis palustris) which I found quickly along with several more spikes of Robust Marsh Orchid.

In the same area new species for the day included Small Blue (Cupido minimus) x1, Chalk Hill Blue (Lysandra coridon) x1, Bug Orchid (Anacamptis coriophora), Rock Sparrow (Gorrión Chillón / Petronia petronia), Cirl Bunting (Escribano Soteno / Emberiza cirlus), Carrion Crow (Corneja Negra / Corvus corone), Grey (Lavandera Cascadena / Motacilla cinerea) and White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba),  Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Común / Certhia brachydactyla) before I headed up to my camp site for the night at Ansó where I spent the rest of the day in the bar doing this blog post and having a beer or four so I hope there aren't too may mistakes.
