Huétor Fields, Embalse de Bermejalis, the Cacín Valley and Balsa de Regidor, Granada Province, Spain.

A second day with Lynn and Steve but with a change of plan due to the weather.

Looking up the channel at Bermejalis.
I started the day with a quick visit to the Fields, I parked at the usual spot and spent a while scanning the Lucerne which was growing quickly still and making counting the Little Bustards (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax) difficult but I managed to see at least 9 necks above the crop.
Looking down towards the Embalse.
Also in the area were Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Cetti's Warbler (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti), Spanish (Yellow) (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Common Reed Warbler (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus), European Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis), European Serin (Serin Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Western House Martin (Avión Común Occidental / Delichon urbicum), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula) and a less expected Tree Pipit (Bisbita Arbóreo / Anthus trivialis).

I dropped down to Huétor and waited on the Municipal car park for Lynn and Steve and whist there added Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Common Whitethroat (Curruca Zarcera / Sylvia communis) and Willow Warbler (Mosquitero Musical / Phylloscopus trochillus).
Desert Darter (Sympetrum sinaiticum) male.
Desert Darter (Sympetrum sinaiticum) male.
Lynn and Steve arrived and we drove over to Moraleda and then South to the Embalse de Bermejalis, we had planned to go around the Embalse and into the Parque Natural de Sierras de Tejeda area but as there was quite a lot of grey heavy looking cloud about we stopped at the inflow channel on the North Shore.
Desert Darter (Sympetrum sinaiticum) male.
We parked and walked down the side of the water channel which I was surprised to see had a flow on it, as we walked we saw teneral Orange-winged Dropwing (Trithemis kirbyi) and Epaulet Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysostigma) which were sitting well so I decided to walk back to the car and get my macro camera as well.
Epaulet Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysostigma) Female.
Just as I reached the car a couple of male Common Crossbills (Piquituerto Común / Loxia curvirostra) flew over calling and landed in a nearby tree, they were very well behaved and allowed me to get a few shot and sat long enough for Steve to get around from the other side of the channel and also take some pictures.
Epaulet Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysostigma) Male.
We returned to the far side of the channel and walked further down towards the water which was quite a way out, on the way we saw the first of several Desert Darters (Sympetrum sinaiticum), Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x4, Violet Dropwing (Trithemis annulata), a single Blue / Common Emperor (Anax imperator), Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens), False Mallow / Mallow Skipper (Carcharodus tripolinus / alceae) x2 and Sage Skipper (Muschampia proto) x8, Small White (Pieris rapae) x1, Southern (Polyommatus celina) x2 and Lang's Short-tailed Blue (Leptotes pirithous) x1.

Sage Skipper (Muschampia proto).
Lynn and I had found a Dragon hanging on the far wall of the Channel which Steve quickly Identified on his return as a Western Spectre (Boyeria Irene).

Desert Orange-tip (Colotis evagore).
Desert Orange-tip (Colotis evagore).
Our final stop of the day was at the very low / green looking Balsa de Regidor which was disappointing dragonfly wise as we only saw a single Violet Dropwing x1 and a couple of Lesser Emperors (Anax parthenope) x2.
Black-winged Stilts (Ciguenuela Común / Himantopus himantopus).
Bird wise it wasn't much better with just 35 or so

Navahermosa and Fuente de Piedra, Malaga Province, Spain.

A day out with friends Lynn and Steve from the UK.
Ebird List for Fuente de Piedra.

Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus).
I went over to meet Lynn and Steve at a spot near Villanueva del Rosario and we headed out along the A92 coming off to visit a spot out on the fields near the village of Navahermosa where we searched some of the tracks, ditches and fields for birds.
Large White (Pieris brassicae).
We took the first track and made a stop when we saw several butterflies flitting around an area of Heliotropium europaeum, most were Sage Skippers x20+ (Muschampia proto) along with False Mallow / Mallow Skipper (Carcharodus tripolinus / alceae) x12+ and Southern Marbled Skipper (Muschampia baeticus) x1, Large (Pieris brassicae) x1, Small (Pieris rapae) x3 and Bath White (Pontia daplidice) x4, Lang's Short-tailed Blue (Leptotes pirithous) x4, Aporodes floralis and Crimson Speckled (Utetheisa pulchella) x lots and plenty of Red-veined Darters (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x30+.

Crimson Speckled (Utetheisa pulchella).
At the end of the track we turned around and retraced our steps, on the way we again saw the Kite but it wasn't as tolerant as when we were going in the other direction, we took the next track and added a nice female Montagu's Harrier (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus), a pale morph Booted Eagle (Aguila Calzada / Aquila penntuas), Black Kite (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans), Western Cattle Egret (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis), Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus) and Northern Wheatear (Collalba Gris / Oenanthe oenanthe).

Black-winged Kite (Elanio Común / Elanus caeruleus).
We drove off the site and headed for town of Fuente de Piedra where we had some lunch and then made a visit to the nearby Fuente de Piedra, a dying wetland that is being killed by the surrounding farmers, agriculture and the local government which allows the illegal water extraction to continue, it will be a very sad loss to the local economy / wildlife.
Whinchat (Tarabilla Norteña / Saxicola rubetra).
We pretty much ignored the areas around the closed visitors center which were all very dry apart from a small area of water on the main lagoon where we saw a 100 or so Greater Flamingo (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus) and lots of Gulls most of which were Lesser Black-backed Gulls (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus).

Huétor Fields, Granada Province, Spain.

A morning down near Huétor catching up with some guides from Birding the Strait's and evening walk around the fields.
Ebird List for the Morning.

Little Bustards (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax).
I headed off down to Huétor at just before 08:00 and checked out the fields for the mobile flock of 16 Little Bustards (Sisón Común / Tetrax tetrax) after getting a message from Oli Reville to say that he was heading my way with Nacho Barrionuevo and their clients from Birding the Strait's.
I didn't find them on the top fields but was very pleased to find them sat on another strip of Lucerne down nearer to the Town where I watched them for a while before going to get some breakfast at the nearby petrol station.
I returned to the spot and was relieved to find the birds were still there, the groups ETA was around 09:30 so I stayed and nervously kept an eye on things until they arrived, thankfully they stayed.
European Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca).
Whilst I waited I added Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), European Turtle Dove (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), immature Montagu's Harrier (Aguilucho Cenizo / Circus pygargus), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula), Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra), Spanish (Yellow) (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae) and White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua), a distant Short-toed Snake Eagle (Culebrera Europeo / Circaetus gallicus) and a pale morph Booted (Aguila Calzada / Aquila penntuas) which came in very quickly over the factory rooftops hunting the Feral Pigeons (Paloma Bravía / Columba livia) but also flushed everything else including the Bustards but thankfully they circled once and came back in.
European Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca).
Oli, Nacho and all arrived and saw the birds well, for some of the group a comfort break was requirred so we headed up to the house getting Iberian  Magpie (Rabilargo Ibérico / Cyanopica cooki) on the way, we had more from the Terrace before they headed off up to Hacho hoping for a couple more species.
I got on with a few jobs including doing the bottom room before going out for an evening walk along the Lucerne fields, it was getting quite dark by the time I reached the Walnut trees so I was surprised to see the Black-winged Kite (Elanio Común / Elanus caeruleus), Eurasian Stone Curlew (Alcaraván Común / Burhinus oedicnemus) x3, Little Owl (Mochuelo Europeo / Athene noctua) and European Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca).
