Los Palacios y Villafranca and Brazo del Este, Seville Province, Spain.

Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus).
Derek and I packed our kit and then headed down to the services A-381 where we met Sonia and Ricky and swapped over to their motor and then headed off towards Los Palacios y Villafranca but made a stop for some breakfast at Restaurante Venta Andrés which we have used several times before.

During the drive up to our first stop we saw Northern Raven (Cuervo grande / Corvus corax), Western Jackdaw (Grajilla occidental / Corvus monedula), White Stork (Ciguena Blanca / Ciconia ciconia), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Spotless Starling (Estornino Negro / Sturnus unicolor), Red-legged Partridge (Perdiz Roja / Alectoris rufa), Lesser Black-backed Gull (Gaviota Sombria / Larus fuscus), Common Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus) and on some flooded fields Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenuela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Black-headed Gull (Gaviota Reidora / Chroicocephalus ridibundus), Western Cattle Egret (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis) and Eurasian Spoonbill (Espátula Común / Platalea leucorodia).

We arrived at the first site along the Arroyo del Conejo where we had some amazing flocks of
Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus) we recorded 1500 on Ebird but I think there were probably double that in truth.

As we drove along the track along the Southern side of the Arroyo we also had Eurasian Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Cetti's Warbler (Cetia Ruiseñor / Cettia cetti), an unexpected Purple Heron (Garza Imperial / Ardea purpurea), European Stonechat (Tarabilla Europea / Saxicola rubicola), Song Thrush (Zorzal Común / Turdus philomelos), European Robin (Petirrojo Europeo / Erithacus rubecula), Common Blackbird (Mirlo Común / Turdus merula), Crested Lark (Cogujada Común / Galerida cristata), European Goldfinch (Jilguero Europeo / Carduelis carduelis), European Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Chloris chloris), Grey Heron (Garza Real / Ardea cinerea), Meadow Pipit (Bisbita Pratense / Anthus pratensis), a nice male Bluethroat (Ruiseñor Pechiazul / Luscinia svecica), White Wagtail (Lavandera Blanca / Montacilla alba), Eurasian Skylark (Alondra Común / Alauda arvensis), Common Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Grande / Charadrius hiaticula), Eurasian Spoonbill (Espátula Común / Platalea leucorodia), another unexpected species was a male Little Bittern (Avetorillo Común / Ixobrychus minutus), Western Marsh Harrier (Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental / Circus aeruginosus), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Common Chiffchaff (Mosquitero Común / Phylloscopus collybita), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Common Linnet (Pardillo Común / Linaria cannabina), Lesser Black-backed Gull, Little Egret (Garceta Común / Egretta garzetta),  White Stork, Zitting Cisticola (Cistícola Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Red Kite (Milano Real / Milvus milvus), Common Snipe (Agachadiza Común / Gallinago gallinago) x31, Common Kingfisher (Martin Pescador Común / Alcedo atthis), Common Kestrel (Cernicalo Vulgar / Falco tinnunculus) and Eurasian Hoopoe (Abubilla Común / Upupa epops).

On our way back to the other side of the Arroyo we check further along the track where we dropped on 2 Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Gorrión Molinero / Passer montanus), Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild), Sardinian Warbler (Curruca Cabecinegra / Curruca melanocephala) and several Small Whites (Pieris rapae) x7.

We crossed back to the Northern side of the Arroyo and parked before walking along the track between the Arroyo and the southern edge of El Pantano adding
Black-winged Stilt, Corn Bunting (Escribano Triguero / Emberiza calandra), Great Cormorant (Cormorán Grande / Phalacrocroax carbo), Common Buzzard, Black Redstart (Colirrojo Tizón / Phoenicurus ochruros), Great Egret (Garceta Grande / Ardea alba), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Eurasian Teal (Cerceta Común / Anas crecca) which I missed, Gadwall (Anade Friso / Mareca strepera), 2 late Red-rumped Swallows (Golondrina Dáurica / Cecropis daurica), Western Swamp-hen (Calamón Común / Porphyrio porphyrio), Great Egret (Garceta Grande / Ardea alba), Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major), lots of Red-veined Darters (Sympetrum fonscolombii) x150+, Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta) x18+, Bath White (Pontia daplidice) x3 and Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) x4.

We returned to the car and then headed off to the Northern end of Brazo del Este where we checked out a couple of different areas, at the first we found 116 Eurasian Spoonbill (Espátula Común / Platalea leucorodia), Pied Avocet (Avoceta Común / Recurvirostra avosetta), Greater Flamingo (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus), Black-winged Stilt x95, Great Cormorant, Glossy Ibis, White Wagtail, Great Egret, Eurasian Skylark, Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Common Greenshank (Archibebe Claro / Tringa nebularia), Common Kestrel, Grey Heron, Western Marsh Harrier, Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus) x1, Large (Pieris brassicae) x2 and Bath White x4, Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) x1, Red-veined Darter x17+, Autumn Squill (Scilla autumnalis), Lesser Celendine (Ranunculus ficaria) and Autumn Narcissus (Narcissus serotinus).

Further along the road we followed the Guadaira Channel picking up lots more Little and several Great Egrets, a Black Stork (Cigüena Negra / Ciconia nigra) and a single Griffon Vulture (Bultre Leonado / Gyps fulvus).

We turned around and then took another track to the south hoping to make our way through to the main Brazo area but we were forced to take divertions as some of the crossing points between the raised banks were flooded or tracks just looked a bit too dodgy, eventually we managed to return to the town of Los Palacios y Villafranca and then went out onto the area via the usual route following the SE-9009 to Arroceros Del Bajo Guadalquivir where we turned onto the usual track through the center of the site.

Along this track we stopped several times, at the first stop we saw good numbers of
Black-winged Stilts x230+, Pied Avocet x181, Eurasian Spoonbill x170+, Northern Shoveler (Cuchara Común / Spatula clypeata), Mallard, Eurasian Teal x100+ and lots more White Storks.

We moved on up to the next area of water where we had some lunch which Ricky and Sonia had prepared for us all, THANKS and whilst we had the food we also added Little and Great Crested Grebe (Somormujo Lavanco / Podiceps cristatus), Western Swamp-hen, Gadwall, Common Pochard (Porrón Europeo / Aythya ferina), a single Marbled Duck (Cerceta pardilla / Marmaronetta angustirostris), Yellow-legged Gull (Gaviota Patiamarilla / Larus Michahellis), Cetti's Warbler, Western Marsh Harrier, Zitting Cisticola, Eurasian Skylark, Great Egret, Western Cattle Egret and Green Sandpiper.

We again continued on to the third area of water and the small channel just passed adding Western Osprey (Águila Pescardora / Pandion haliaetus), Squacco Heron (Garcilla Cangrejera / Ardeola ralloides) and Common Kingfisher before following the track to the sluices seeing another Black Stork on the way and in that area we also had several Spanish Sparrows (Gorrión Moruno / Passer hispaniolensis) in the tamarisks along with a few Black-headed Weaver (Tejedor Cabecinegro / Ploceus melanocephalus).

We crossed to the track which follows another channel and found a large flock of Black-winged Stilts on a flooded area but they were soon up and calling loudly when a very smart Peregrine Falcon (Halcón Peregrino / Falco peregrinus) hurtled in scattering them in all directions.

We continued on to the end of the track where we had a second Glossy Ibis show with thousands of birds in the air and then flying toward us and over our heads and away.

We did a short dive along another track seeing a few more 
Pied Avocet before turning around and then driving off the site and back to where we had left Derek's car.

We then said goodbye to Sonia and Ricky and headed back to Derek's where we did the Ebird lists before I headed off home after three really good days birding in very good company.
